Prichard workers stop working as the mayor presses the council on a budget

Prichard's mayor urges the council to pass a budget after some city workers stop working

Davis said the Fire Chief told the council two weeks ago that 14 firefighters had left and others were considering leaving. Those figures are from the mayor's post.

If you live in Prichard, here's where the city's budget fight stands. Mayor Carletta Davis says some Public Services employees have stopped working, citing low pay and heavy workloads. She's asking residents to press the City Council to pass her proposed budget.

Davis says her administration inherited an unbalanced budget, unpaid bills and short-staffed departments. Her plan covers pay, staffing, equipment and supplies, and the required public hearing is done. The council hasn't voted. State law set a Sept. 20 deadline for the 2027 budget, and the current year's budget carries over when none passes.

“Our employees need support. Our residents need services. Our city needs action.”

  • Council meets: Thu., Nov. 5, at 4 p.m.
  • Last budget the council approved: 2023
  • Court-ordered mediation: ended without an agreement

Daphne gets $8.1 million in federal money to make County Road 13 safer

If you drive County Road 13 in Daphne, here's what's coming. Sen. Katie Britt and the city announced Monday that $8.1 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation will help fund improvements along 2.5 miles of the road. The money comes from the Safe Streets and Roads for All program.

Plans call for roundabouts at Pleasant Road and Champions Way, lighting, 8-foot sidewalks, and crosswalks at school zones and the new roundabouts. The grant and $2 million in local money fund the project, which the mayor calls phase one of a plan to improve safety for more than 2,000 children who travel to three schools.

“With three schools along this stretch and more than 130 crashes in just five years, these roundabouts, lights, sidewalks, and crosswalks will save lives.”

Sen. Katie Britt
  • Stretch: CR 64/Daphne Road to Champions Way/Lawson Road
  • Traffic: about 9,600 vehicles a day
  • Crashes in darkness, dawn or dusk: 27%

132crashes on the corridor from 2019 through 2023

Three of those crashes involved suspected serious injuries. The corridor is part of the city's high-injury network.
