If you're wondering what Mobile's mayor wants to do with future property tax growth, here's the plan. Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis is pushing to create three new tax districts using tax increment financing, or : midtown along I-65, Tillmans Corner and the waterfront. They wouldn't raise taxes. Growth above today's level would go to projects in each district, and could help pay for things like new sidewalks and a new police headquarters.

Mobile's three proposed TIFs could bring in millions in five years

That growth might otherwise go to Mobile County and Mobile County Public Schools, so the mayor says the city wants both involved in deciding how the money is spent. County Commissioner Randall Dueitt raised concerns Oct. 14 and asked council members to hold off calling a public hearing. A new state law that took effect Oct. 1 lets up to 50% of the city's property tax base into TIFs.

  • Existing TIFs: just under 10% of the city
  • Council: decision on hold until at least next week
  • Separate plan: Councilman Ben Reynolds' smaller Tillmans Corner TIF

Mobile's property tax value in TIFs would grow from just under 10% to 30%
