  • On June 21, the City of Bayou La Batre will celebrate its 70th anniversary with a parade starting at Alba Middle School at 10 a.m.—led by Grand Marshal George C. Wallace, Jr.—and then family events at the Community Center featuring food trucks and live music by Journey2Mars, marking a day of local tradition.  1819 News
  • Hundreds ran across the Cochrane—Africatown Bridge on Saturday during the Africatown 7th Annual Bridge Challenge 5K to raise funds for local community projects by the Africatown Community Development Corporation. Runners enjoyed clear views of the Mobile River and downtown as traffic lanes were safely blocked for the event.  WKRG News 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Before dawn on Sunday, an SUV crashed in downtown Mobile at the intersection of Church and South Lawrence Streets, hitting two utility poles and a lamp post and injuring two people—one was outside receiving treatment while firefighters worked to extract the other from the overturned vehicle.  WKRG News 5

CRIME NEWS

  • The Mobile County Sheriff Office is investigating a shooting on Markris Circle in Eight Mile that took place before 8 p.m. Sunday night and involved a second scene near Blount High School, and one person was detained by local law enforcement; more details will be shared today.  WKRG News 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Green herons now appear more often in Alabama thanks to warmer weather—these birds are known for using tools such as dropped bread to lure fish—and have been spotted at local sites like Railroad Park and Avondale Park. Their increased presence has excited local birdwatchers who enjoy watching their clever techniques.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Baldwin County officials are reminding beachgoers to follow safety tips—especially avoiding rip currents—as part of a beach safety initiative created in honor of deputy Bill Smith, who died trying to rescue a swimmer. The county uses a flag warning system and text alerts to keep visitors aware of dangerous conditions.  1819 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The South Alabama Area Agency on Aging runs a free Medicare seminar at the BNO Building downtown on the first Tuesday of each month to help seniors learn about Medicare options, with James Roberson from SHIP explaining Medicare Advantage and Parts A, B, C, and D — the next seminar will be held in July.
