- ➤ At the Daphne Sports Complex on Sunday, Dec. 14, Vicki Workman hosted her son Kyler's birthday party that began with no guests but quickly drew nearly 50 local residents after a Facebook post. - ➤ Residents will gather downtown on New Year's Eve at MoonPie Over Mobile, a long-running celebration started in 2008—bringing a festive spirit to the city's streets. Lagniappe Daily
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources ended oyster harvesting season at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23 after surveys showed fewer harvestable oysters and water quality concerns. The season began Oct.6 and yielded about 5,000 sacks of oysters amid environmental stressors. 1819 News
- ➤ Researchers from Dauphin Island Sea Lab will track sound changes on the SS United States as the vessel leaves Mobile — to be sunk off the Florida Panhandle in late February or March 2026. The study will last one year after the ship becomes the world’s largest artificial reef after remediation. AL.com
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Kay Ivey awarded $43.8M in grants to help low-income households cover heating and cooling costs through 18 community action agencies. The funding (which includes supplemental federal dollars) will support residents in Mobile and nearby areas. UTV 44
- ➤ Foley City Council awarded a $3.72 million contract to Roy Lewis Construction to build a hurricane-safe room on North Poplar Street that will house over 200 people and serve as an emergency command post — the facility will be complete before early June ahead of the 2027 hurricane season. AL.com
