  • Port of Africatown launched its Community Beautification Initiative Saturday in downtown Prichard, where volunteers planted 16 flower beds with T-Mobile funding (the first phase of a long-term plan).   • Mobile’s Christmas Extravaganza took place at the James Seals Community Center this weekend, featuring a toy giveaway, inflatables, lawn games, and live music for the community.   • New York City advocates are fighting to save the historic SS United States docked in Mobile, which arrived in March to be prepped for conversion into the world’s largest artificial reef. The ship’s poor condition plus its historic value have fueled debate over its future use.  Lagniappe Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said anglers must catch red snapper before midnight Wednesday, Dec. 31, with a federal quota (664,552 pounds) set for the season and plans to announce 2026 dates in spring.  Gulf Coast Media

  • Data show suicides in Fairhope rose from 6 to 11 in the first nine months while Silverhill increased from 1 to 4, prompting advocates to urge leaders to secure grants for better mental care.
