EDUCATION NEWS

  • Orange Beach City Schools named four winners as Teachers and Staff of the Year for 2025-2026: Teachers Grace Stanton and Janna Bradford and Staff Elizabeth Wood and Rachel Pettiway; they will be honored at the Legacy Awards Banquet on Jan. 29 at Perdido Beach Resort (recognizing community impact).  Gulf Coast Media
  • Foley High School students are learning practical teaching skills in a career tech class that sends groups to Mathis Elementary to assist teachers, and the program has grown from 40 to 180 students over three years (sparking both teaching interest and exploration of other fields).  Gulf Coast Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On December 17, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo welcomed two endangered red wolves, Jenkins and Walker (both 2.5 years old) to join the AZA SAFE program that helps preserve rare canids. Fewer than 20 remain in the wild while over 200 live in accredited facilities.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A 3.6-million-dollar project on St. Stephens Road added widened lanes and new sidewalks (including a pedestrian bridge) in a ribbon-cutting dedication Thursday to boost safety for walkers. Councilman Cory Penn and Mayor Cheriogotis see this work as a model for more pedestrian-friendly streets.  NBC 15
  • The Mobile City Council will review a $1 million contract after Christmas to revive the dormant minor-league hockey team as part of the city's sports revival plan.  Lagniappe Daily
  • Dauphin Island officials announced Wednesday a new law that prohibits feeding wildlife (which includes foxes, raccoons, possums, and turtles) by imposing fines up to $500 and jail terms up to six months while exempting feral cat colonies.  UTV 44

  • Best Friends Animal Society tells pet owners in Mobile to keep pets safe indoors when temperatures drop below 20 degrees and check under car hoods for hiding cats. Baldwin County Animal Shelter offers half price adoptions Monday through Friday (10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) for families looking to add a pet this winter.  Gulf Coast Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Orange Beach’s softball team celebrated its fifth consecutive state title during halftime of a basketball game against Saraland on Tuesday, and players, coaches & community members received championship rings. The team now aims for a sixth title to break the state record.  Gulf Coast Media
  • The UFL announced Monday that former University of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron has been named head coach of the Birmingham Stallions, replacing Skip Holtz — the Mobile native recently ended his bid for lieutenant governor and will lead the team into a new era.  1819 News
  • Bayside Academy’s inaugural fishing team finished third at Wheeler Lake during a weekend tournament, marking its freshwater debut away from the Gulf Coast. Anglers Luke Cox and Trip Hackney led the team with a second-place finish in the boat bass weight division — coming two pounds short of first place.  Gulf Coast Media
