COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Core Project in Mobile and Baldwin County received a donation from Alabama Power to improve its holiday services with a computer and touch screen monitor (for interactive learning) to benefit over 700 families (supporting full family care).  NBC 15
  • Today, Daphne High School Baseball launched a fundraiser by selling shirts to help Cleighton Strickland recover from a car accident as he was moved to The Shepherd Center in Atlanta. The sale runs online until Friday, Dec. 19 — all proceeds benefit the Strickland Family.  NBC 15
  • Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama will dedicate a new home to Aislynn Reyes in Theodore on Friday, Dec. 19. Reyes, who has moved five times in five years and volunteered over 300 hours, will gain stable housing as she works at USA Health & pursues her studies.  NBC 15
  • Hunters Helping the Hungry now allows hunters to harvest two does a day after ADCNR expanded the bag limit to better manage deer populations and reduce crop damage. The program, which donates free-processed venison to local food banks (reimbursed at $2 per pound), supports both ecological balance and community nutrition.  Gulf Coast Media
  • On Saturday, volunteers placed American flags on over 4,000 graves at a Spanish Fort cemetery during Wreaths Across America Day. Cub Scouts and community members honored fallen soldiers (declaring every day is Veterans Day) as the flags remain through the Christmas season.  AL.com

  • The Wharf's Marlin Circle will welcome Margaritaville's first Last Mango Bar & Chill in spring 2026. The venue offers a coastal bar, indoor restaurant, and arcade to create a vibrant waterfront gathering spot for locals.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Tim Harrison of ABC of Alabama says the construction industry will benefit now that Gov. Ivey and state leaders reorganized the Department of Labor into the Alabama Department of Workforce. He noted the new Academy of Craft Training will give high school students hands-on experience (a move aimed at filling future jobs).  1819 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chabad of Mobile celebrated Hanukkah's first night by lighting a menorah made of donated food cans on the Eastern Shore Sunday night. The food will be given to Feeding the Gulf Coast, and a Dec. 16 event in Mobile included newly elected mayor Spiro Cheriogotis.  Gulf Coast Media

  • Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said the design for the new animal shelter is about halfway done and expects final plans by early next year.  NBC 15
  • Retired Port Authority Director Jimmy Lyons was honored as Board Member Emeritus during Tuesday, Dec. 16 meeting, receiving a newly minted port incentive coin + a standing ovation for his key role in expanding container operations and creating local jobs.  NBC 15
  • State Sen. Chris Elliott is drafting a bill to ban thin layer dredge material placement in Mobile Bay to protect the bay’s ecosystem + officials from the Alabama Port Authority have voiced concerns over its effects.  NBC 15

SPORTS NEWS

  • Orange Beach sophomore Lee Steele surpassed 1,000 career points last week as he excelled in basketball + football. The 6-foot-6 standout helped his team open the season 8-3 and has drawn Division I interest while aiming to lead his team to a State Championship.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Six Baldwin County football standouts joined the South last Friday at the 67th North-South All-Star Classic held at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile. The North won 41+28 in a high-scoring contest that showcased local players’ notable efforts.  Gulf Coast Media
