  • Baldwin County farmer Hope Cassebaum makes history by being elected as the first female state board officer and Southwest Area vice president of the Alabama Farmers Federation at its Dec. 8 annual meeting in Montgomery. She will serve on the Alfa Insurance board — reflecting her long-standing ties to local agriculture.  Gulf Coast Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Economic development officials disclosed $130.4 million in state tax incentives on Wednesday to support four new industrial projects planned to bring over $4.3 billion in investment to the region.  Lagniappe Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mobile County School Board terminated Theodore High School bookkeeper Courtney Davis after two audits found 1,200 accounting errors in her records. Davis, who said she was burdened with extra duties during a principal transition, is exploring her next steps.  NBC 15
  • Jack Hawkins Jr. will retire as Troy University's chancellor at the end of 2027 (after 38 years of service) and then serve as an adviser while a successor is hired in 2028. He remains the country's longest-serving public college chief executive.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ivey announced over $3.8M will aid low-income residents in lowering energy bills via the Alabama Weatherization Assistance Program (administered by ADECA). Thirteen community action agencies statewide will conduct energy audits and improvements, prioritizing seniors, disabled individuals, and families with children.  NBC 15
  • Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte announced Fannie Mae is relocating its San Francisco office to Birmingham to create hundreds of jobs and strengthen local opportunities. Sen. Tommy Tuberville said the move is expected soon (praising the leadership behind the decision).  1819 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission approved dispensary licenses on Thursday, Dec. 11, paving the way for medical marijuana to be available in spring (2026). The commission will then certify physicians and set up a patient registry as it moves forward with the program.  Alabama Public Radio

  • Senior running back Brennen Yamane overcame injuries and setbacks at Bayside Academy to help the team reach a state title appearance and sign with Pomona-Pitzer for his Division III career. He plans to make a quick impact in the field, film room, weight room, and classroom.  Gulf Coast Media
