COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Feeding the Gulf Coast is hosting its largest food distribution event at Ladd Peebles Stadium today—meals are being provided to 2,000 families with help from over 140 volunteers as explained by CEO Michael Ledger.  WKRG News 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • State Street Coffee and Ice Cream opened in downtown Elberta to offer coffee drinks and 24 ice cream flavors in a lounge designed for community gatherings—its owners, Candice Bass and the Harrison team, will work with the Benjamin Thomas Werner Foundation soon to support drug abuse awareness. The shop plans to host local markets in its larger back room in the coming weeks.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Butting USA began building its first U.S. facility in Baldwin County on Nov. 13 — the ceremony featured the planting of a live oak tree to show the company’s long promise, along with a $61 million investment and plans for 100 new jobs. Local and state leaders said the project will bring more work and growth to the region as construction continues in phases.  Gulf Coast Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Leaders at Dauphin Island Sea Lab broke ground on a new dormitory to ease crowded lodging for students & researchers and expand educational programs. The $14 million project, backed by state legislators, will initially house 63 people and create new revenue opportunities for scientific meetings and summer sessions.  AL.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sallie's Ashes debuted at the Fairhope Film Festival with an opening cocktail screening on November 13 and a public showing on November 16 after premiering in Telluride in August—this 40-minute documentary follows three Baldwin County women who organized to fight coal ash stored at Plant Barry. The film highlights their efforts to remove 21 million tons of coal ash and will have additional public screenings announced through the Coal Ash Action Group.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Local fishermen, shrimpers and environmental activists have noticed clearer water in Mobile Bay due mostly to an ongoing drought and other factors — experts will study its long-term impact.  Lagniappe Daily
  • Okaloosa County officials announced that the historic ocean liner SS United States, cleaned at the Port of Mobile, will be sunk early next year off Florida’s Gulf Coast to become the world’s largest artificial reef—its final resting spot set 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin and 32 nautical miles southeast of Pensacola. The $10.1 million project will use funds from Pensacola tourism and Coastal Conservation Association Florida to support regional marine life and tourism.  Alabama Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Alabama Port Authority announced the Upper Mobile Bay Wetlands Project will receive $24 million in RESTORE Act funding and signed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit to begin construction—this project will use dredged material to create hundreds of acres of wetlands south of the Causeway that will boost coastal resilience.  UTV 44
  • The Alabama Educational Television Commission voted Tuesday to continue its contract with PBS — keeping shows like Sesame Street on the channel until July and forming a committee to study future options amid public backlash.  Alabama Public Radio

  • In the Round 3 4A game on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic High School, the undefeated St. Michael Cardinals—led by star quarterback Gunner Rivers—will face the Bullock County Hornets, who will try to tie their win record and secure a semifinal spot.  Gulf Coast Media
