- ➤ Former WKRG-TV reporter Leo Alexander died Thursday in Mobile at age 61—he worked at WKRG, WWL-TV and WRC-TV, ran for mayor in 2010, and appeared in the film Under Siege. WKRG News 5
- ➤ City of Mobile Animal Services answered a call about loose dogs at a Mobile home and later found around 30 to 40 dogs when the owner asked for help handling extra animals. The healthy dogs will remain at the home until adopters, rescue groups, or fosters step in (each dog will receive vet checks plus spay/neuter surgery before adoption). WKRG News 5
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Mobile's National Maritime Museum has announced details for its upcoming Jimmy Buffett exhibit, which will cover 6,000 square feet and display over 130 artifacts like handwritten lyrics and interviews. The museum will also open the Son of a Son of a Sailor exhibit in September, the Delta Mosaic exhibit in April, and a career exhibit in 2028—updates that will be added as the collections grow. - ➤ Mobile country rock band The Red Clay Strays will perform at the Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday, Nov. 19. The live performance airs on ABC at 7 p.m. CST from Nashville — the band will feature hits like Wondering Why, Wanna Be Loved, and I'm Still Fine. WKRG News 5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama Department of Education released the 2024-2025 report cards showing Mobile County Public Schools improved their overall score to 83 (up from 81 last year) and reduced chronic absenteeism to 12.81, while college and career readiness reached 86.71. Detailed scores for academic growth and graduation rates also highlight progress in key areas. WKRG News 5
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama Department of Human Resources has begun releasing full November SNAP benefits today on EBT cards—following a notice from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. Recipients with later issuance dates will receive benefits on their regular schedule. NBC 15
- ➤ Mobile officials released a holiday trash and garbage collection schedule with special service changes for Thanksgiving through New Year's Day—residents should note that trash will not run on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day while makeup days and recycling center hours vary by holiday. - ➤ The Mobile City Council held a public hearing Tuesday on a proposal to add Louisiana-based Acadian Ambulance Service to the city's EMS system. Newman's Emergency Medical Service warned that a third provider could strain resources—while local hospitals backed Acadian's plan to improve training and reduce long wait times, with a vote scheduled for next week. 1819 News
- ➤ The Mobile County Solid Waste Disposal Authority Board recommended that the Commission not approve Waste Management’s plan to expand the Chastang Sanitary Landfill — a proposal that would nearly triple its daily trash intake and allow out-of-state waste. Opponents say the expansion risks increased pollution and odor — and the Commission will review the proposal on Dec. 8 before sending it to the state for further review. WKRG News 5

- ➤ The City of Prichard will hold its second annual Let’s Talk Suicide Prevention program on Tuesday, Nov 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Trinity Faith Bible Church, 4401 Whistler Street in Eight Mile—councilwoman Stephani Johnson-Norwood will host sessions on using proper emergency responses for those in crisis.
