COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials in Mobile County have warned residents to take shelter as dangerously cold weather continues today—cold shelters opened at the Waterfront Rescue Mission, McKemie Place for women, and the Salvation Army for men while officials urge everyone to follow fire safety tips to avoid electrical fires.  WKRG News 5
  • On Day 40 of the government shutdown, Tori Bell’s pet food pantry on St. Anthony Street in Mobile saw record demand and quickly depleted supplies—families face hard choices between feeding children or pets. Bell warns that if donations do not increase, more animals may end up on the streets and she plans to open a second location in Theodore soon.  WKRG News 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A teen baseball player from Daphne High School, Cleighton Strickland (Class of 2025), was seriously injured in a car accident over the weekend and remains in critical condition today, with his family and medical team working hard for his recovery.  NBC 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fairhope Film Festival returns for its 13th year, running from Nov. 13 to Nov. 16 with over 30 films scheduled and adding an international twist by partnering with the Fethiye Film Festival in Turkey—offering local audiences a unique blend of short and feature films. This four-day event promises a mix of community engagement and global film selections.  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On November 10, a 34-foot white sailboat named Kirsten was found adrift on the south end of Gaillard Island in Mobile Bay while the Coast Guard began investigating why it was abandoned and asked anyone with information to call 833-662-8724.  WKRG News 5
  • Waste Management requested a permit to raise the Chastang Landfill capacity from 1,725 to 5,000 tons daily—expanding service to 17 counties—and a county commissioner questioned why the city’s Solid Waste Authority supported the proposal. Mobile County Commissioners will vote on the expansion request Dec. 8 and, if approved, the proposal will move to the state Department of Environmental Management for final review.  AL.com
  • Representatives Barbara Drummond and Adline Clarke announced free food gift cards for SNAP recipients in House Districts 97 and 103—this effort is in partnership with Mobile City Council President C.J. Small and Piggly Wiggly and will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 15 at Food Champs parking lot at 2692 Dauphin Island Parkway where recipients must show an EBT card, valid ID, and current utility bill.  NBC 15

HEALTH NEWS

  • A test chicken in the 36544 area was used to detect mosquito-borne illnesses and returned a positive result for West Nile Virus, confirmed by the Mobile County Health Department. Vector Services will spray and survey nearby areas—residents are advised to use repellent and remove standing water.  WKRG News 5

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Gidget is a 4-month-old Spaniel/Maltese mix that came to Mobile SPCA from a local shelter with her two siblings and is now ready for adoption. Her adoption fee covers spay, vaccinations, and microchipping—sponsored by Premier Turf Gulf Coast, which specializes in pet-friendly synthetic turf.  WKRG News 5

  • South Alabama Men’s Basketball team will face New Mexico State on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. CST at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas—this neutral-site game adds the seventh stop to their month-long road schedule. Live audio coverage will be available on the Jags Radio Network.  WKRG News 5
  • Daphne and Spanish Fort advanced to the second round of the state flag football playoffs after winning Tuesday night games in the Class 6-7A bracket in Baldwin County.
