CULTURE NEWS

  • Excelsior Band Preservation Inc. will hold a fundraising concert on November 16th at Byrne Memorial Hall to support plans to restore the defunct Ace Theatre as a permanent home for the 142-year-old band—this restoration will create a multipurpose space for concerts and music education. Porchlight LLC signed an agreement with Mobile County to renovate the theater, with work expected to finish in 12 to 18 months.  AL.com
  • The Mobile Symphony Orchestra will perform its 'Bohemia' show at the Saenger Theatre on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.—tickets on Saturday are $20 for adults and $10 for students, while federal workers must call ahead for free admission and K-12 students can attend free on Sunday through the Big Red Ticket program.  WKRG News 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former USA student Margaret Renkl, now a New York Times columnist, will visit the University of South Alabama on November 13 for an evening event celebrating storytelling, nature and Southern roots. The event features a reading, discussion and book signing in the USA Student Center Ballroom—giving guests a chance to meet the acclaimed author.  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Prichard has announced two parades for Veterans Day scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 11. The Veterans Day Motorcade Parade will start at 2 p.m. from Vigor High School and finish at City Hall—followed by Veterans of the World Parade beginning at 3 p.m. to honor Sgt. RéMano Lee Campbell.  WKRG News 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Franklin Primary Health Center earned accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to launch a new family medicine residency program that will begin training on July 1 and address Alabama's need for more primary care doctors. The program will enroll 12 residents over three years and include rotations at local clinics (serving uninsured patients) and hospitals (supporting southwest Alabama).  Gulf Coast Media
  • Alabama has submitted a plan for the Rural Health Transformation Program to boost healthcare in 58 rural counties with eleven initiatives aimed at expanding emergency services and telehealth; funding awards will be announced by year-end—state leaders and hospital officials say the changes will help struggling hospitals and their communities.  WKRG News 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bayside Academy beat Houston Academy 46-7 in round 1 of the playoffs in Daphne—sophomore quarterback Davis Barnett threw five touchdown passes and the Admirals will face Randolph County on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in Wedowee.  Gulf Coast Media
  • WKRG News 5 teamed up with the Panini Senior Bowl to deliver weekly high school football coverage along the Gulf Coast - this week the spotlight was on Theodore alum La'Mical Perine, who rushed for over 3,000 yards in high school and later played in the NFL.  WKRG News 5
  • The University of South Alabama Men's Basketball team defeated Alcorn State on Nov. 6 at the Mitchell Center with a final score of 76–70, according to a USA news release. Top scorers Adam Olsen, Peyton Law, and Chaze Harris helped secure the win as the team improved its record against the Bravehawks to 7–3.  WKRG News 5
  • Cheryl Corvo, the head coach at CMSA, won the Kerry O’Brien Coaches Award in Mobile—she is one of only 10 coaches chosen among 2,500 clubs—after her swimmers selected her for her work with both beginner and top-level swimmers.  WKRG News 5
  • St. Michael advanced in the 4A playoffs after defeating Pike County 49-21 on Friday night. Running back Noah Moss broke the playoff record with 368 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 16 carries (a standout performance) and the team will face Pleasant Grove in Birmingham in the next round.  Gulf Coast Media
