COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Semmes Senior Center received outdoor fitness upgrades that include a one-mile ADA-accessible walking trail, larger fitness station and new shuffleboard and pickleball courts. Officials held a ribbon-cutting on Nov. 5 and said the center, which offers over 30 programs and sees around 1,000 members each month, now gives residents a new safe space — a hub for exercise and socializing. - ➤ The Mobile Community Affairs Department and Infinite Opportunities will fill 100 backpacks and tote bags with essential items for Mobilians in need this holiday season. Residents can drop off contributions at Government Plaza (205 Government St.) or the Community Affairs Office (200 Government St.) through December 20. UTV 44
- ➤ The Mobile Bay Riders Cycling Club will host a charity cycling ride on November 8 from Tanner Williams Community Park to support children and families at Ronald McDonald House. Riders can choose a 20-mile ride at 9:30 a.m., a 40-mile ride at 8:30 a.m., or a 60-mile ride at 7:30 a.m.—lunch will be provided by deMaiz Taco Cantina. WKRG News 5
- ➤ The Mobile Jaycees will announce the 2026-2027 Court of Mobile Azalea Trail Maids at the Queen’s Coronation and Introduction Ceremony on November 16 at Saraland High School, with doors opening at 2 p.m. The event will also reveal the new Queen, First Lady-in-Waiting, and Second Lady-in-Waiting—continuing a tradition that has highlighted Mobile's community beautification efforts for over 75 years. - ➤ The Barnwell Community Organization will host the Barnwell Community Day — Butts, Spuds & Brews Festival on Nov. 15 at the Barnwell Community Center in Fairhope from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., where food, drinks, live music and local vendors will serve the community. The event also introduces a new Spud Run — with a 5K starting at 8 a.m. and a 1-mile run at 9 a.m., both beginning and ending at the center. Gulf Coast Media
- ➤ The inaugural Fort Morgan Seafood Festival will be held Nov 15 through Nov 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fort Morgan Marina—local groups including Tacky Jacks, Billy's Seafood, Navy Cove Oysters, Admiral Shellfish Company and Annan's Shrimp Co. will offer fresh seafood, live music and arts booths that benefit the volunteer fire department. - ➤ Carol Danieli got state approval for a new Mardi Gras license plate and needs 1,000 pre-orders before production starts—each plate costing an extra $50 will fund community grants for local carnival groups. NBC 15
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Coastal Alabama Community College will simulate a plane crash on its Gulf Shores campus Monday, Nov. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m.—a drill designed to strengthen emergency response coordination among college departments and local agencies. - ➤ David Bronner, head of Retirement Systems of Alabama, has asked state leaders to fix a pond holding 22 million cubic yards of coal ash near the Mobile River because a breach could hurt Mobile Bay for decades — he urged officials to work with Alabama Power and regulators to secure it. Environmental advocates worry that the toxic ash could leak dangerous chemicals into the river and groundwater, putting local health and nature at risk. AL.com

- ➤ Mobile County Public School System is partnering with Feeding the Gulf Coast to help families during the government shutdown as SNAP benefits are suspended. Food ordered using forms submitted before noon on Nov. 5 will be delivered to schools today (and distributed discreetly) to support students. WKRG News 5
- ➤ The Mobile Mardi Gras Barricade Krewe will host a hiring fair on November 12 from 8 a.m. to noon at 852 Gayle Street—applicants must bring an ID and social security card and pass a physical and drug test to join parade barricade and traffic duties at $15.60 per hour. NBC 15
- ➤ Fairhope named Frank McArdle its 2025 Veteran of the Year in honor of his military service—he served in the U.S. Army from 1974 to 1976 and has led local American Legion Post 199. McArdle will lead the Veterans Day parade on Nov. 8 at 10 a.m.—the parade starting at the Civic Center will feature military vehicles, veterans' organizations and a light breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Gulf Coast Media
