  • Southern Company reported a $1.7 billion profit with earnings of $1.55 per share in its quarterly report released Thursday for the period July through September. The report credits stronger utility revenues—despite higher depreciation and interest expenses—for boosting performance compared to last year.  1819 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Harrison Ford received the inaugural E.O. Wilson Legacy Award for Transformative Conservation Leadership at the Half-Earth Day celebration at the Field Museum in Chicago on Wednesday—where foundation president Paula J. Ehrlich highlighted his 30-year dedication to environmental causes and his long friendship with the late Alabama scientist who once discovered fire ants in Mobile.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Mobile announced Pleasant Avenue will be closed intermittently between St. Stephens Road and Stanton Road starting Monday, Nov. 3 for about three weeks as Alabama Power installs new pole foundations. Flaggers will control one-lane sections—drivers should use the detour via Stanton Road, Prichard Avenue, and St. Stephens Road.  WKRG News 5
  • Federal workers at Birmingham, Mobile and Huntsville airports received meals from local food banks during the government shutdown—Birmingham’s Operation UpLift served 250 people and Mobile’s event delivered 4,300 meals. Huntsville officials said they will soon set up an on-site food bank to support TSA and FAA staff.  AL.com
  • AJ McCarron from Mobile announced he will run for lieutenant governor next year to use his sports fame in a political fight—joining a growing list of Alabama sports figures stepping into politics. His decision comes as other well-known names like former coach Tommy Tuberville and media figures consider similar moves—raising questions about how athletic success might boost a political campaign.  AL.com
  • The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System is seeking proposals from firms to manage recreational access at Big Creek Lake. A selected partner will operate facilities—piers, a covered pavilion, fishing areas, restrooms and a boat rental site—while protecting the drinking water for 350,000 residents.  WKRG News 5

  • McGill-Toolen held off Baldwin County 21-14 on Friday night at Lipscomb Complex as quarterback Blane Barre made key touchdown plays in a 12-play drive that secured the playoff spot—while in another game, Bryant won with its largest margin since 2008 and Jackson-Olin will face No. 1 Clay-Chalkville in the first playoff round on Nov. 7.  The Call News
  • St. Michael beat UMS-Wright 25-20 on Thursday night in Fairhope after junior quarterback Gunner Rivers threw a winning touchdown pass with seven seconds left.
