Good morning, Mobile. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 30th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last week, the AWF Wild Game Cook-Off Series returned to Mobile’s Gulf Coast tradition with about 25 cook teams and nearly 1,800 attendees sampling dishes made from local game, fowl, and fish. AWF Executive Director Tim Gothard said the event, which supports conservation projects, will be followed by contests in Selma today and in Grove Hill on November 6.  Gulf Coast Media
  • The Crichton Mobile Rescue Fire Station near Springhill Avenue now carries the name Alex G. Trenier Fire Station to honor his four decades of service as one of Mobile’s first Black District Chiefs. Community members gathered Wednesday to remember him, and his son Captain John Trenier said (the new name shows a tribute to his work) it is meant to guide future firefighters.  WKRG News 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jenny McCain balances her work as an attorney with running Woodhill Cottage, a small local business known for its peach and strawberry jams that add a smooth, authentic Southern flavor to everyday meals — her gift baskets and personal approach strengthen local commerce.  1819 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Plans are underway to create a civil rights and cultural heritage district along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Mobile—spearheaded by County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood who is renovating the historic Vernon Crawford law firm office into a museum. The new museum will share an oral history of key civil rights cases to educate future generations.  NBC 15
  • Over the weekend, hundreds gathered at Stapleton School for the annual Stapleton Bluegrass Festival; the event featured bands such as Junior Sisk, Amanda Cook, Three on a String, Carolina Bluegrass Style, Fat Man Squeeze, and Cowgirl Up Bluegrass. Some musicians took part in an impromptu jam session—entertaining festival-goers—while the fundraiser, the school’s largest since being revived in 2018, highlighted community support.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Prodisee Pantry in Spanish Fort is hosting a food distribution today for federal employees in Mobile and Baldwin counties who are affected by the federal shutdown. Volunteers are packaging canned goods, baby products, and fresh produce such as cabbage, celery, tomatoes — and oranges to help meet urgent needs.  WKRG News 5
  • Mobile city and county officials broke ground yesterday on an $11.2 million complete streets project for Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue that upgrades asphalt, utilities, drainage, sidewalks and bike lanes—partly funded by the RESTORE Act and local agencies. The project will connect the Three Mile Creek Greenway to downtown—reviving a historically significant corridor.  AL.com
  • Mobile Area Water and Sewer Service is accepting proposals from private companies to operate boat rentals and other amenities to reopen Big Creek Lake, with submissions due by noon on December 1 and bids opened at 1:00 p.m. The lake was closed to recreation in February because of invasive giant salvinia—while legal disputes over its ownership continue.  UTV 44

HEALTH NEWS

  • Due to the federal shutdown, USDA will not use a $6 billion contingency fund to pay for SNAP benefits in November, risking food assistance for over 750,000 Alabamians—while about 130,000 could lose health coverage as Affordable Care Act subsidies expire and premiums may rise by 93%. Local leaders warn that without a swift funding deal, many residents will face the tough choice between paying for health care and buying food.  AL.com

  • St. Michael Catholic will face UMS-Wright today at Fairhope in the week 11 Gulf Coast Media Game of the Week as the Cardinals (9-0) aim for their first undefeated regular season while the Bulldogs (6-3) look to jumpstart their playoff run next week.  Gulf Coast Media
