  • Mobile will celebrate the Christmas season at the Lighting of the Tree event in Mardi Gras Park on November 21 (from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.). The free event includes live performances, food trucks, and a visit from Santa (with mayor-elect Spiro Cheriogotis lighting the tree at 6:20 p.m.).  UTV 44
  • Mobile’s new archbishop Mark Rivituso—appointed in July and installed Sept. 3 at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception—discussed his vision for the local Catholic community with Devon Walsh, saying he plans to help neighbors in need and work with other faith groups.  WKRG News 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After midnight, Mobile Fire Rescue fought a two-alarm fire at 3Circle Church on South Sage Avenue—50 firefighters worked for about an hour to control the blaze while investigators continue looking into its cause as the sanctuary sustained extensive damage from persistently burning roofing foam.  1819 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Southeastern Grocers announced it will close 32 Winn-Dixie and 8 Harveys supermarkets across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi by the end of 2025 — some locations are already being taken over by grocers like Food City and Piggly Wiggly.  WKRG News 5
  • Local tariffs and inflation have pushed the cost of coffee beans at Nova Espresso in Mobile up by more than $2.50 per pound compared to last year — and owner Tim Gautreaux said he kept prices steady to support customers — though reduced traffic is now hurting the shop's bottom line.  WKRG News 5

  • Gov. Kay Ivey has invited students from K-12 to join the Alabama Governor's App Challenge — a statewide contest that lets them show skills in coding and design. Students must register online by Jan 19 and schools will pick winners by grade band by Jan 30.  NBC 15

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The ADCNR is holding two public listening sessions in November to gather feedback on a new shrimp fishery management plan that aims to keep the state's shrimping industry sustainable — if adopted, it will guide future management. The first session is on November 12th from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Bayou La Batre Community Center and the second on November 13th from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Gulf Shores Activity Center.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Analysts say if the Supreme Court weakens Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, Alabama lawmakers may redraw congressional districts to remove seats held by Shomari Figures and Terri Sewell. The move could lower Black representation in Congress—raising concerns about election fairness in the future.  AL.com
  • Cody Road—south of Airport Boulevard—will close at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 due to a sewer connection crossing the road and will reopen at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26.  WKRG News 5
