COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gulf Coast Paddle and Racket will host a pickleball and tennis tournament this weekend at the Daphne Pickleball and Tennis Complex to raise funds for Camp Rapahope—a local nonprofit that supports children battling cancer.  WKRG News 5
  • Penelope House held its annual domestic violence awareness walk at Sage Park in Mobile on Oct 22 to honor a mother’s violent death and remind residents to recognize signs of intimate partner violence—survivors shared their experiences to empower others. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Thursday morning, Mobile Fire Department responded to a fire at Three Circle Church on Sage Avenue—crews are battling the flames and heavy smoke while no one was injured and the cause remains unknown.  WKRG News 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SeaD Consulting tested shrimp at the National Shrimp Festival and south Baldwin County restaurants and found that while some vendors fixed their labels after a quick notice on Oct. 9, many restaurants still misrepresented imported shrimp as domestic. The study noted shifts in sourcing—some spots switched from domestic to imported while others improved their supplies, showing state labeling laws are not strictly enforced.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Airbus and the University of South Alabama announced a historic partnership on Oct. 21 at the MacQueen Alumni Center to develop training programs and new projects aimed at growing their local aerospace workforce—supporting over 2,000 jobs at the Mobile plant.  AL.com
  • On Oct. 20, culinary students at Baldwin Preparatory Academy opened Blaze Bistro to the public, serving meals like chicken wings and pizzas priced from $1 to $11. The students ran extended hours and overcame technical issues from an Amazon outage — learning to handle real restaurant challenges.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city will close Conti Street between Jackson and Joachim starting Tuesday, October 28 for a roof replacement at the historic Saenger Theatre. The closure will last about six to eight weeks and traffic will be detoured via S. Joachim Street, W. Government Street — and N. Jackson Street.  City of Mobile
  • Foley city officials are asking residents for input on local flooding and drainage issues in the Bon Secour Watershed as they work on a stormwater management plan—officials say a 13-question survey will be open for a month to help guide future improvements.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Prodisee Pantry expanded its weekly Tuesday food distribution to include all federal employees in Baldwin and Mobile counties amid a 25-day government shutdown plus it served 16 families last week. The service, held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., provides over 100 pounds of fresh food and may support up to 400 Coast Guard families if delays in future paychecks occur.  Gulf Coast Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Natalie Fox, who served as interim CEO for four months — following former CEO Owen Bailey's retirement — has been named CEO of USA Health, one of south Alabama's largest healthcare systems. Fox — a doctor of nursing practice who led local COVID-19 testing and vaccination efforts — said she is honored to lead the system and improve patient care in the region.  AL.com

  • The Foley varsity girls will open their season on November 6th at the McGill-Toolen Tipoff against Davidson while the varsity boys will begin on November 10th at Blount. Coach Roosevelt Moore, entering his 24th season, plans to keep his team playing fast and physical—coach Shanece McKinney Sims expects high energy from the girls as they build on last season's success.  Gulf Coast Media
