COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The renovated T-ball field at Municipal Park on Museum Drive in Mobile opened Tuesday evening and children played on its new grass after extensive upgrades. Friends of Municipal Park raised $150,000 + partnered with the City of Mobile to secure an extra $1 million for irrigation, sod, fencing, sidewalks, lighting, and plans to improve other fields soon.  WKRG News 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Winn-Dixie announced it will exit Alabama as it refocuses on Florida. The transition involves transferring 32 stores and eight Harvey’s supermarkets to other grocery operators, with three Alabama locations set to become Food City in early November & the divestiture expected to finish early next year.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A protester wearing an inflatable penis costume was arrested Saturday in downtown Fairhope during a No Kings demonstration, as police charged her with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct while the city navigated a broader debate over free speech and library book censorship.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Members of Government Street United Methodist Church in Mobile are restoring a 130-year-old window using Medieval techniques—this project follows a collapse two years ago from water damage and nearby vibrations, and the work will finish in two to three months as fundraising continues.  WKRG News 5
  • Mobile Ballet has relaunched its Nutcracker Savings Card program that gives shoppers 20% off at over 50 local stores when they buy the $50 card, now available through the Mobile Ballet website. The fundraiser supports ballet performances, community outreach and scholarships—helping locals kick off early holiday shopping between November 1-10.  UTV 44

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McGill-Toolen president Dr. Bry Shields announced his resignation effective (June 30) so he can fully focus on his role at St. Ignatius Parish while remaining active in ministry. The Archdiocese of Mobile will oversee the appointment of his successor (approval pending) to ensure a smooth transition at the school.  UTV 44
  • Mobile County Public Schools reported that the Class of 2026 received 20,000 acceptance letters and $618M in scholarship offers from several colleges. The report noted that many students, including a Vigor student with $583K in offers, will be the first in their families to attend college (a milestone for the district).  WKRG News 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Nature Conservancy has established the E.O. Wilson Land Between the Rivers Preserve, protecting 8,000 acres in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta—this new preserve will keep swamps, wetlands and old-growth trees safe in honor of Wilson’s legacy. It will ensure that the land remains undeveloped to support biodiversity for the future.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mobile City Council members requested detailed police reports on nearly 100 calls at the troubled Black-owned Phat Tuesday Sports Bar after a near-shooting and other incidents raised safety concerns; the council will decide next week whether to revoke its license or adjust operating hours while supporters say the bar is a vital gathering spot.  AL.com
  • Approximately 5 acres of Taylor Park on Baltimore Street will become affordable housing after Mobile City Council unanimously voted to donate the land to the Mobile Housing Authority—this project will replace the park's baseball field and aims to help revitalize the Baltimore community following recent infrastructure improvements. The change is part of broader efforts to renew the local area and expand affordable housing options.  UTV 44

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baldwin Health in Foley finished its $200 million expansion with the dedication of the new Wayne T. Smith Atrium on Oct. 16—this final phase added a five-story patient tower with surgical facilities, a dedicated women’s and children’s unit, and extra inpatient beds to serve more than 490,000 patients annually.  WKRG News 5

  • Snapdragons, officially known as Antirrhinum majus, are planted on the Gulf Coast in fall to bloom all year and add bright color to local gardens.
