COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army will begin its Winter Collection Drive on November 3 — accepting coats, blankets, socks, gloves, and scarves at Jack’s locations in Thomasville, Jackson, Loxley, Citronelle, Brewton, Atmore, and Creola — and at the WKRG News 5 studio at 555 Broadcast Drive in Mobile. The drive will continue through Jan. 9 with donations delivered to local Salvation Army chapters for distribution.  WKRG News 5
  • Feeding the Gulf Coast is increasing food supplies and setting up new sites to help federal workers and families hurt by the shutdown. Michael Ledger, the nonprofit’s president, said the group is matching food with need ahead of the holidays — and it relies on community donations to keep shelves stocked.  WKRG News 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mobile’s annual Greek Fest is underway at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church today until 9 p.m.—attendees can enjoy Greek dance shows, live music, vendors, and Greek food at this free, cashless event; the festival continues tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  UTV 44
  • Parrot Heads in Paradise announced a free Jimmy Buffett tribute show set for October 22 at 6:00 p.m. at The Hangout in Gulf Shores — the event is part of the MOTM week featuring live trop rock performances.  UTV 44

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tuskegee University is ranked as the nation’s fourth best historically Black college and placed ninth among southern regional universities in the 2026 rankings — a drop from its third-place ranking last year. The report also shows strong performances by other Alabama HBCUs in key areas like nursing and veterans’ programs.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mobile will host a Traffic Warrant Clinic on Nov. 7 at the Springhill Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—residents with traffic warrants must register ahead to settle their cases and enjoy entertainment, food, child care, and community resources.  WKRG News 5
  • Prichard honored longtime councilwoman Ossia Edwards by opening the Ossia Edwards Museum Art and Culture Center that displays murals, art, artifacts and sculptures in her name. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with free admission, and Roy L. Smith will take her council seat next month — he said he is learning from her strong legacy.  WKRG News 5
  • Commissioners on the State Charter School Commission voted to renew Magic City Acceptance Academy's charter for five years after a motion for a three-year term was amended due to technical difficulties. Appointees from Governor Ivey, Lt. Governor Ainsworth and others were present, and school representatives said that noncompliance with state law would lead to a charter revocation hearing.  1819 News

  • Baker upset No. 3 Mary Montgomery (43-28) Friday night at E.S. Grider Stadium when quarterback Tate Graham threw four touchdown passes to Khatori Marion and Myles Johnson returned an interception 27 yards for the clinching score.  The Call News
  • Several high school football teams won big on Friday night as Williamson edged top-ranked Vigor 22-14 in overtime—Leroy marched to its 600th win with a 56-0 rout, while Theodore, McGill-Toolen and Clarke County added key victories to boost their regional standings.  The Call News
  • St. Michael Cardinals beat the Pensacola Tigers 50-13 to improve to 8-0 and set a new win streak record—Coach Rivers said the team played hard despite a rough start. The Cardinals will face their next opponent at Orange Beach on Oct. 24 as they chase an undefeated season.  Gulf Coast Media
  • The Orange Beach High School Makos are honored as the cheer squad of the week as they are led by Head Coach Kayley Hoyle, Assistant Coach Shelly Webb and Team Captain Kamry Kurtis. The 24-member squad won the 2024 Super South Regional Championship and the 4A Gameday State Championship.  WKRG News 5
