- ➤ Penelope House supports domestic violence survivors in Mobile during October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and its director Tonie Ann Torrans said only one-fourth of cases are reported (966 domestic-related calls have been logged so far). WKRG News 5
- ➤ A Mobile sewing group called Ladies on a Mission held its annual Show & Tell Charity Luncheon at St. Louis Street Missionary Baptist Church to showcase handmade clothing sent to children in Africa. The group began in 2013 and last year sent 150 dresses and 40 outfits through community donations — each item carefully crafted to help those in need. WKRG News 5
- ➤ A giant tortoise named Joey has been missing from Linda’s Learning Farm in Semmes for over three weeks, and farm staff are searching social media for clues while using him to teach kids about rare animals. Farm employees said they are receiving tips and urge anyone who spots Joey to call Linda at (251)-402-3858. WKRG News 5
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mobile County Judge Wesley Pipes is teaming up with local officials and mental health providers to reduce jail stays for people with mental health needs using a model from Miami—this plan will save taxpayers money and improve public safety. He held a two-day meeting with community leaders and is already testing a mental health court that lets non-violent defendants have charges dropped if they finish the program. NBC 15
- ➤ Indivisible Mobile is hosting a Halloween-themed protest at Government Plaza on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.—attendees are encouraged to wear black or a costume. The protest is one of many nationwide events set to denounce attacks on women’s rights, civil rights, healthcare access, voting rights, immigrant rights, retirement funds, environmental protections and human rights. - ➤ Stanton Road near University Hospital is closed daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting today as Alabama Power crews install transmission line bases — the closure will last several weeks. WKRG News 5
- ➤ The city docks in Bayou La Batre are getting an upgrade with a $250,000 federal grant to double the pier at Rolston Park from 100 to 200 feet—Mayor Henry Barnes Sr. said the improvements are needed to ease crowding. WKRG News 5

- ➤ A new report by VocoVision finds Alabama now has the fewest school-based mental health providers—especially in rural areas where four in 10 students lack on-site support. Experts warn that schools must add counselors and therapists while exploring teletherapy to help meet the growing crisis. UTV 44

- ➤ Mobile native MLB Draft pick Caleb Lopes will host a baseball camp for children ages seven and up at Surge Church on Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—the camp will offer professional training and mentorship from multiple pros while donating all proceeds to a local youth ministry with registration limited to 100 participants at a fee of $100.
