COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lighthouse is leading domestic violence awareness efforts this month by urging communities to light up landmarks in purple and to issue proclamations highlighting the impact of domestic violence. The nonprofit (serving local counties) will hold its seventh annual Candlelight Vigil at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 at May Day Park in Daphne to honor victims.  Gulf Coast Media
  • The Thomas Hospital Auxiliary honored volunteer Mary Gardner as Volunteer of the Quarter and donated $71,500 to the Thomas Hospital Foundation at its 63rd annual meeting on Sept. 18—this donation is part of a $500,000 pledge to fund a new hospital tower and expanded services. Gardner has volunteered over 700 hours at the hospital gift shop in the past two years.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Two teenagers were honored at a Bay Minette City Council meeting for saving a man's life during a boating accident on the Tensaw River on Aug. 16— they quickly rescued him by using a towel and belt as a tourniquet until first responders arrived.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Market in the Park returns to Cathedral Square in Mobile on Saturday, October 11 from 7:30 a.m. until noon through November 15. Event Manager JeNyia Rocker said the fall market will offer locally grown produce and handmade items—giving community shoppers a chance to support local vendors.  WKRG News 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On September 22, a fishing trip turned into an emergency when a boat quickly filled with water and capsized 25 miles offshore until the charter crew from Zeke’s Landing Marina rescued two stranded fishermen over two hours later—Captain Bryan Watts and his deckhand advised using an emergency beacon for safety.  Gulf Coast Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chandra Wright, director of environmental and educational outreach for Gulf State Park, is volunteering as the first Chief Shrimp Investigator at the Annual National Shrimp Festival to ensure vendors follow state seafood laws. She will also oversee DNA testing of shrimp on site—an effort that supports the local shrimping industry and upholds the new seafood labeling law enacted last year.  Gulf Coast Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An ICE raid in Georgia detained over 300 South Korean workers at a battery plant site and raised concerns over Hyundai’s $26 billion U.S. investment plans that include expanding its Montgomery operations — officials maintain that companies must follow the law while investors watch for any economic impact.  Alabama Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science was ranked 19th among the best public high schools nationwide and the best in the state by Niche. The magnet school—welcoming students in 10th through 12th grade from all 67 counties—also earned top marks for STEM and college prep programs.  AL.com
  • Isabella Elmore, an 8th-grade student at Bright Academy, turned her dyslexia into strength and now reads four grade levels above her own—her success shows how hard work can overcome learning challenges.  WKRG News 5
  • The Blaze Bistro—a simulated kitchen training space at Baldwin Preparatory Academy in Loxley—will open to the public Oct. 20. It will serve student-crafted meals Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with curbside pick-up at 11 a.m. for orders placed by 10:45 a.m.  Gulf Coast Media

  • ALDOT said the groundbreaking for Mobile River Bridge will be delayed until 2026. Kiewit, the design-build team, has opened a project office in Mobile — pile and vibration testing for the Bayway project is underway.  NBC 15
  • Heather Campbell, a military wife near Maxwell Air Force Base, lost her food bank job this summer due to federal cuts while her Air Force husband's paycheck is at risk on Wednesday+ they must use credit cards to cover their mortgage and feed their three children. Lawmakers in Washington are reviewing bipartisan measures to ensure uninterrupted military pay as families face rising debt during the shutdown.  Alabama Public Radio

  • Orange Beach junior catcher Colton Boyd became the program’s first Division I commit when he pledged to Southern Miss in late September—he posted strong numbers last season and now looks forward to joining a storied college team with multiple NCAA appearances.   • LeFlore beat Elberta 20-8 as Tyler Gardner ran for 97 yards and scored a touchdown, keeping playoff hopes alive with back-to-back wins; Baldwin County handed Murphy a 56-0 loss after multiple turnovers — Jackson won 41-0 with four touchdowns by E.J.
