  • The Magnolia Springs Garden Club is hosting its second annual 'Meet ’Em in the Arboretum' fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Magnolia Springs Arboretum across from Jesse’s Restaurant — the event will feature live music by Leonard Houston, wine, appetizers and seasonal decorations as the club highlights its local efforts to enhance flower beds.  Gulf Coast Media

  • A well-known rock cover band, The Black Jacket Symphony, will perform Pink Floyd’s The Wall in its entirety on Jan 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Saenger Theatre—ticket sales begin Friday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m.  WKRG News 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science in Mobile was ranked the best public high school in the state and placed #19 nationwide by Niche, a college and school search platform. The tuition-free residential school serves students from 67 counties with college-level courses and a strong STEM program.  WKRG News 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, dead fish covered a private beach on Dog River and more floated nearby—experts say heavy rain and runoff likely caused low oxygen levels—suggesting a menhaden die-off.  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Spanish Fort City Council approved on Monday a $4,000 contract with USDA APHIS to capture and euthanize coyotes, beavers, muskrats, and nutria from areas such as Spanish Fort Estates amid complaints about pet and property safety. Some council members and the advocacy group ARC raised concerns over the broad scope of removal measures—warning that beneficial wildlife may suffer—while others stressed that urgent action was needed.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Controversial Halloween decorations at Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch's home drew heavy criticism after a Facebook post showed skeleton ICE agents chasing skeletons in sombreros and Mexican-style ponchos, and his wife said the display was meant to raise awareness about federal immigration issues—adding her husband only mows the lawn.  1819 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alabama’s rural hospitals face further financial stress as the government shutdown delays enhanced Medicare reimbursements that help cover their thin margins—84% are already operating in the red. Atmore Community Hospital, DW McMillan Memorial Hospital and Monroe County Hospital are among those affected, and local doctors warn that delays are disrupting essential care.  UTV 44
  • Golfers will swap everyday drives for a cause at the One Club Charity Golf Classic scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, at the One Club Golf Course in Gulf Shores — the event raises funds for breast cancer research and patient support programs.
