- ➤ The Mobile SPCA will hold a large rummage sale on Friday and Saturday, Oct 3-4 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 620 Zeigler Circle West near the Fairgrounds to raise funds for homeless pets—items include furniture, antiques, decor, games, and electronics and the event is rain or shine. WKRG News 5
- ➤ Mobile County will reopen the Cedar Point Pier at 18250 Dauphin Island Parkway on Friday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m.—after being closed since March for repairs and accessibility upgrades. Visitors will soon fish for free 24 hours a day except on Christmas Day, with upgrades that improve shoreline protection and ADA access. WKRG News 5
- ➤ Mobile Fire-Rescue observes Fire Prevention Week by hosting two Fire and Life Safety Expos at local schools next week after a Smoke Alarm Blitz in Autumndale, where crews inspected 138 homes and installed 70 smoke alarms after a tragic fire that took a 5-year-old's life. The expo at O’Rourke Elementary on Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at Williamson Preparatory Academy on Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will feature fire engine demonstrations, safety displays, and visits from local characters — Paw Patrol, Puggie the Fire Hydrant, and Sparky. - ➤ The Baldwin County Board of Education unanimously renamed the new elementary school in Daphne to Jubilee Elementary School—set to hold 1,200 students at a total cost of $35,000,000 and scheduled to open in August. Gulf Coast Media
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama enacted a new law effective October 1 that increases penalties for firearm possession—making it a Class C felony for anyone with a recent felony or three convictions—and raises the penalty for shooting into an occupied home to a Class A felony. The law also ends probation and parole for those caught with a firearm. NBC 15
- ➤ A judge is hearing arguments today in a lawsuit filed by Mobile City Councilman William Carroll, who contests District Two’s election results after Samantha Ingram won in August—she is accused of not reestablishing residency despite owning several properties in the district. WKRG News 5
- ➤ Mobile city officials defended Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s ordinance targeting blighted and vacant properties during a City Council committee meeting — they said the proposal does not aim to price people out. Lagniappe Daily

- ➤ Leo Garcia Venegas, a Baldwin County construction worker, filed a suit against the Department of Homeland Security after he was detained in May and June during immigration raids even though he is a U.S. citizen — his lawyers claim that armed officers raided private work sites without checking for proof of citizenship. The Institute for Justice represents him in the suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama — court proceedings will address the alleged unconstitutional detentions. 1819 News
- ➤ Mobile has received a $7.5M grant from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act to expand public access to its waterfront. The city will use $3.5M to build a new road to Brookley by the Bay and $4M to relocate storm drains, extend the Cooper Riverside Park bulkhead and build a boardwalk—efforts that will improve coastal infrastructure and support downtown growth. - ➤ Park officials at Johnson Beach—part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore—warn that the public area may soon close due to the federal shutdown while Naval Air Station Pensacola is already closed to visitors even though base operations continue.
