COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mobile County Animal Shelter in Mobile is over capacity and is asking local residents to adopt or foster its 103 adoptable dogs and puppies and 7 adoptable cats and kittens to free up space at its facility. Adoption hours run Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—fees cover spay/neuter, vaccinations, and other vital treatments—so acting now can help save lives.  NBC 15
  • The Magnolia Springs Volunteer Fire Department will host its 6th Annual Firefighter Festival on Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 14809 Gates Avenue—this event will offer food, music, handmade crafts and a children’s area as it supports the local volunteer fire department.  Gulf Coast Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Fairhope animal advocate (Bob Echols) won a bronze medal from Readers' Favorite for his book For Our Friends the Animals which inspires readers to treat all living creatures with care.   • Fairhope Film Festival will run from November 13th to 16th with over 30 films shown at venues — Coastal Alabama Community College Fairhope Campus, Fairhope Public Library, University of South Alabama Baldwin County Campus and the Ben Gall Theater. Festival organizers say it will partner with the Fethiye Film Festival in Turkey to offer an international film experience.  WKRG News 5

  • Residents on Dauphin Island remain divided over red foxes as conservation groups and local officials push for predator control to protect endangered sea turtles and migratory birds—A Mobile County judge issued a temporary restraining order stopping fox removal while a lawsuit challenges the town’s management plan.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MAWSS announced it will issue a request for proposals to let outside concessionaires run limited boating and fishing services on Big Creek Lake after closing the lake on February 4 due to invasive species concerns. The new facility will include piers — a covered pavilion, boat rental options, and shore fishing areas — and will operate five days a week as it supplies drinking water to around 350,000 consumers.  1819 News
  • Mobile County voters who will vote in the Tuesday runoffs may face confusion after a federal Motor Voter Act audit flagged 37,000 voters even though they cast their ballots in the general on Aug. 26—each affected voter must return a letter within 90 days to confirm their registration. Officials urged voters to complete a reidentification form to have their ballots counted and advised everyone to check their status before the next election.  WKRG News 5
  • Old Shell Road between Hillside and Wacker Lanes in Mobile will close today at 6 a.m.—City crews are repairing a broken storm drain and expect to finish by day’s end while traffic detours via McGregor, Spring Hill, and New Shiloh Avenues.  City of Mobile
  • Mobile's mayor-elect (Spiro Cheriogotis) raised nearly $1.8 million during his campaign, out-raising every other municipal candidate in Alabama in 2025. He won a close runoff election against Rep. Barbara Drummond, with campaign donations coming mostly from local supporters and contributions from 13 other states.  AL.com
  • The bronze statue of Admiral Semmes has been restored to its original 125-year-old granite base and will be dedicated today at 2 p.m. at Fort McDermott Confederate Memorial Park in Spanish Fort after its removal following vandalism in June 2020—free shuttles will run from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. from a nearby parking lot as parking is limited.  WKRG News 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Chickasaw community gathered last Friday at Chickasaw Elementary School to support two young students fighting cancer—Brighton, a kindergartner diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer, and Nevaeh, a second grader with a rare form of the disease. Supporters including students and first responders wore yellow and presented gifts as the girls’ mothers expressed gratitude for the community’s care.  WKRG News 5

  • Week 6 of Mobile high school football ended yesterday as McGill-Toolen defeated Davidson while analysts Simone Eli—Gerhard Mathangani reviewed key plays during live segments like 5th Quarter Extra and Fan Cam.   • On Friday night, Fairhope extended its winning streak to five by defeating Theodore 31-7 at C.A. Douglas Field with quarterback Trey Garner throwing four touchdown passes and 222 yards — while Jackson, Mobile Christian, St. Paul’s, McGill-Toolen, and Clarke Co. won their games with strong plays led by key players like Kendrick Able, Israel Benard, and Hayden Fincher.  The Call News
