COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Africatown Redevelopment Corporation is hosting a free homeownership educational event for community members to learn about buying a home. The event will be held Saturday, September 27, at the Robert L. Hope Community Center from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. — executive director Karlos Finley will guide participants on the process.  WKRG News 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Baldwin County Public Schools Board will consider a proposal on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Bay Minette to begin discussions on using the old Loxley Elementary School for a new mental health program modeled after AltaPointe's West Mobile Academy—aimed at helping students with behavioral challenges. Administrators say the plan is needed to address growing mental health issues among students.  1819 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today a ribbon cutting for the Lower Perdido Islands Restoration Project is set in Orange Beach as officials restore and create 30 acres of coastal habitats on Robinson and Walker islands—this effort supports local wildlife, sustains fish habitats and serves beachgoers while balancing environmental and economic needs.  UTV 44
  • A drought report released Tuesday shows that 94.82% of Alabama is now in drought, with moderate and severe conditions affecting several counties despite some areas receiving up to 2 inches of rain on Wednesday and Thursday—rain that may help in the next report. The National Weather Service expects rain through Friday but drier weather next week will likely keep drought conditions in place.  AL.com
  • A new study finds toxic levels of arsenic and cadmium in the Mobile River near Plant Barry—levels that match those measured after the 2008 Kingston coal-ash spill—and raises concerns about the river’s safety for local communities.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Traffic in Langan Park will change as the lake dredging project begins—Fluornoy Drive will close on Friday and Max McGill Drive will become two-way—while some parking areas are closed and crews remove sediment to boost water quality and recreational use.  WKRG News 5
  • Gov. Kay Ivey and House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter filed a complaint against the AHSAA to challenge the one-year transfer rule under the CHOOSE Act after a judge blocked parts of the rule earlier this month, and she said her support for school choice remains firm + she expects the court to address the issue soon.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Cities including Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Decatur, and Muscle Shoals are moving to add a 10-cent per milliliter tax on vape liquids—if they do not act by Oct. 1, they will lose the chance to impose the new fee. Some councilmen warned that the added tax may burden local businesses and hurt small retailers.  AL.com
  • House Pro-Tem Chris Pringle from Mobile said that Alabama licensees universally dislike the Board of Pharmacy after a sunset report revealed errors in recording minutes about former secretary Donna Yeatman's resignation and settlement. Legislators will scrutinize the board and other licensing boards at a sunset committee meeting on Thursday—raising questions about oversight.  1819 News
  • Downtown Mobile is getting new two-way lanes on North Dearborn Street and Warren Street as fresh yellow paint marks the change for safer traffic under the Downtown Street Optimization Project. Some local business owners reported that drivers are confused by detours and missing signs — further streets will convert soon to ease the flow.  WKRG News 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alabama Department of Public Health issued an advisory after a horse on a Coffee County farm tested positive for rabies, showing scratch marks on its nose and violent behavior over 72 hours—unvaccinated horses are now under observation and exposed individuals have begun post-exposure treatment. The department urged residents to keep pets leashed and avoid contact with wildlife or animals acting strangely.  AL.com
  • Mobile Infirmary launched its new General Surgery Residency Program in July to train 15 residents over five years and received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The accredited program will allow residents to complete over 1,000 surgical cases—applications for the inaugural class are now being accepted.  WKRG News 5

  • In Leroy yesterday, Ja’Kavien “Caveman” Collins ran for three touchdowns and passed for another as he led his Class 1A team to a 44—14 win over Washington County. Timothy Parnell and Josh Reed added key plays while the win marked Leroy’s 10th straight game.  The Call News
