- ➤ Gulf State Park events coordinator Cindy Langston was surprised in her office on Tuesday when the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber named her the recipient of the Island Spirit Award. She received an award package—co-sponsored by Beachball Properties and including a cash prize, custom lapel pin, keepsake plaque, flowers and a free lunch at DeSoto’s Seafood Kitchen—as recognition for her dedication managing events at Gulf State and Meaher State Parks. - ➤ The Mobile Arts Council in partnership with the City of Mobile and the Alabama State Council on the Arts is inviting local poets to apply for Mobile’s 2026 to 2028 Poet Laureate position. Applicants must be 18 or older and can apply online until October 15, with finalist interviews set for November and the winner announced in December—this role will lead community poetry events. - ➤ Columbia Southern University added seven new academic programs that focus on public safety and specialized industries. The new offerings include a master’s degree, certificates and concentrations such as maritime safety—one of the only fully online programs in this field, along with the renamed College of Space, Intelligence and Military Operations. - ➤ Bayside Academy senior Forrest Smith—one of fewer than 1% of U.S. high school seniors nationwide—has been named a semifinalist in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program and will need to submit a detailed application in February to become a finalist. Gulf Coast Media
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mobile Baykeeper appealed the dismissal of its lawsuit against Alabama Power over the closure of the Plant Berry coal ash lagoon—arguing that capping the lagoon with a synthetic cover without removing the ash does not meet federal standards and risks pollution in local waters. The group seeks a legally binding agreement to enforce proper separation of ash from water, while Alabama Power maintains that filing a plan is not enough to solve the issue. 1819 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Samantha Ingram, who won the District 2 City Council race with 52.7% of the vote, filed a motion in court to challenge Mobile’s 40-year-old one-year residency law by asking a judge to apply a state law’s 90-day rule + she defeated incumbent William Carroll, who alleged she did not meet the requirement. Her hearing is set for Oct 15 + she will be sworn in on Nov 3. AL.com
- ➤ Former Mobile County District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis won the mayoral runoff and will take office in 40 days; he said he will review city staff, meet with transit officials about trolleys, set up a new neighborhood engagement department, and push for affordable housing with city incentives—he also plans to support strong police staffing and target youth violence. - ➤ The Alabama Department of Transportation will start repair work on the Dauphin Island Bridge on Sept. 30th, and drivers will face delays over the next three to four years. Crews will work underwater to fix the concrete on the seven-mile bridge—keeping it open during repairs. WKRG News 5
- ➤ John Merrill said that Alabama’s redistricting must show the real population so that every vote counts—majority-minority districts have grown over time and lawmakers must work together to serve everyone. 1819 News

- ➤ Tony Diliberto has led an annual Dads and Kids Weekend at Alabama State Parks to teach families basic camping skills and enjoy nature—this event began with a few dads and boys and now grows to 25 participants who learn kayaking, mountain biking, and cooking.
