- ➤ A Visual Capitalist analysis shows that nearly 771,000 Americans experienced homelessness in 2024 with California reporting 187,084 cases and New York 158,019, while Alabama ranked 30th with 4,601 cases—fewer than 10 homeless individuals per 10,000 residents. HUD data also indicates that Alabama’s homeless population increased 39% from 2023. AL.com
- ➤ The Alligators and Ale Cookoff is set for Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Alligator Alley at 19950 County Road 71 Ext.—Wes Moore will lead an alligator demonstration at 11 a.m., rib tastings will start at noon, and live music will play at 2:30 p.m. with general admission at $65 while children six and under get in for free. - ➤ Mobile will soon have a 7.5-foot-tall statue of Jimmy Buffett at the National Maritime Museum—facing the river where his family once worked—as part of a festival that honors his music and ties to the community. The Son of a Sailor Fest begins tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. with a second line route and live music. NBC 15
- ➤ The City of Mobile, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf, and members of the Buffett family selected sculptor Ben Victor to create a 7.5-foot, lifelike statue of Jimmy Buffett on the downtown riverfront. The statue and an immersive exhibit honoring his legacy will be unveiled in September 2026—marking a continued tribute to his impact on the Gulf Coast. UTV 44
- ➤ The Stapleton Bluegrass Festival, the largest fundraiser for Stapleton School, will be held on October 25 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 35480 Harriott Ave—organizers say the event will feature six bands, eight food trucks and family-friendly activities that support student programs. - ➤ South Baldwin Christian Academy held a ribbon cutting on Sept 16th in Gulf Shores for a new classroom building that adds seven high school classrooms and expands the campus to nine acres for its 212 students. The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber sponsored the event and school leaders honored board members, donors, and staff—marking over a decade of planning and overcoming challenges with the site. - ➤ Mobile County’s Department of Environmental Enforcement will host Operation Clean Sweep with drop-off events on Sept. 20 at 7195 Half Mile Rd., Irvington, Oct. 18 at 1113 Hubert Pierce Rd., Mobile, Nov. 8 at 12740 US-43 in Axis, and Dec. 6 at 7195 Half Mile Rd., Irvington—each household can drop off one load of items like furniture, clothing, and electronics with proof of residency required. - ➤ Former Mobile Mayor Mike Dow endorsed Spiro Cheriogotis for mayor and said Cheriogotis has the vision, integrity, partnerships and focus needed to move the city forward—he urged residents to bring their families and friends to vote on Tuesday, September 23. 1819 News
- ➤ Robertsdale voters will head to the polls on Sept. 23 to choose a new mayor and council member—while runoff elections are held in Gulf Shores and Daphne—and candidates urge improvements for issues like sewage overflows and the need for family-friendly facilities. WKRG News 5
- ➤ The City of Mobile is breaking ground today at the intersection of N. Jefferson and St. Louis streets to start a $17 million Complete Streets project that will rebuild 17 blocks and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists—using a block-by-block plan to keep most roads open during a two-and-a-half year construction.
