COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local radio crews moved their broadcast center weeks ago while broadcaster Tim Camp—celebrated for his dedication—fought cancer and passed away on Saturday. His work kept local radio thriving and staff are planning a celebration of his life with details to come.  NBC 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf in downtown Mobile plans a 6,000-square-foot exhibit honoring local icon Jimmy Buffett by displaying artifacts from his over 50-year career, including his first contract, handwritten notes, family photos, guitars, platinum records, and a fishing rod. Mobile City Council approved an agreement with Buffett’s estate on Tuesday — the exhibit will debut in September in the 4th Annual Son of a Sailor Festival.  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mobile City Council approved an agreement on Tuesday morning that allows Via to run the public transit system after weeks of discussions, and the council also approved Mayor Sandy Stimpson's final transit plan.  Lagniappe Daily
  • State Representative Barbara Drummond, a mayoral candidate, received the endorsement of Mobile PD’s Homicide Unit during last night's debate, including detectives Julius Nettles, Nick Cerepeau, Kenyada Kee Kee Taylor, and Jermaine Rogers. She said the support shows her plan to boost police and community ties to keep Mobile safe—an important goal in her race.  UTV 44
  • Mayor candidates Barbara Drummond and Spiro Cheriogotis clashed Tuesday in Mobile on issues like police body cameras, public safety, and plans to upgrade downtown parks and theaters. Drummond pointed to her long public service record while Cheriogotis stressed his business background and local investments—critical as the Sept. 23 runoff nears.  AL.com
  • Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon faces a legal fight over the release of police bodycam footage from a September 2024 domestic incident involving him and his wife—his office said the case was expected to be dismissed while his wife called the accusations vile, and a lawyer has 30 days to amend the complaint. This action comes as legal teams prepare to resume discovery following a ruled open records lawsuit.  AL.com
  • Saraland residents will see a 2.5 percent increase in water bills and a 5 percent rise in sewer bills starting Oct. 1. Those with minimum usage plans will pay an extra $1.44 a month while average and high usage bills will increase by $2.38 and $4.57 respectively.  WKRG News 5

  • USA Health’s Fletcher Eaton, M.A. joined WKRG News 5 in September to share warning signs and advice for starting a conversation about suicide prevention in Mobile—he urged residents to call or text 988 if they need help.  WKRG News 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • South Alabama Football will play Troy in the annual Battle for the Belt game at 6 p.m. CT on October 4 at Veterans Memorial Stadium, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ if not picked up by a linear network.  NBC 15
  • The Senior Bowl announced tickets are now on sale for the 77th Annual Panini Senior Bowl at South Alabama’s Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile—this game will showcase top college football talent and attract scouts, coaches, and media from all 32 teams. The event is set for January 31 and has been a key stepping stone for NFL prospects, as reflected by 40 percent of last year’s draft picks coming from previous games.  UTV 44
