COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Veterans Helping Veterans Car and Truck Show took place Saturday at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park—organized by the P.L. Wilson Marine Corps League—to raise about $5,000 for veteran service organizations and first responders. The event honored veterans and aimed to support local heroes in the community.  WKRG News 5
  • Veterans advocate Dr. Barry Booth was honored Friday by the Military Order of the Purple Heart for his long service to veterans—he received the award aboard the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship at Battleship Memorial Park, where he serves as a Battleship Commissioner. The retired dentist from Spanish Fort, who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, also supports Honor Flight South Alabama.  WKRG News 5
  • Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama announced today that its new Exploremores cookie—featuring chocolate, marshmallow, and toasted almond flavored crème—will debut in the 2026 cookie season starting Dec. 8.   • Airbus marks 10 years of work in Mobile on Sunday—its only site in the U.S. for making commercial aircraft, having grown from one assembly line on 116 acres with 300 workers to three lines on 190 acres with 2,000 employees. The company will complete its 600th aircraft later this year—highlighting a major milestone in its growth.  WKRG News 5

  • Mobile radio icon Tim Camp died Saturday, Sept. 13 after a career spanning 50 years that included founding the Hangout Music Festival and sharing ownership of local stations. 92.1 The Zew honored him today with a tribute playlist as Mobile pays respect to his legacy—his work earned him a key to the city in 2017.  WKRG News 5

  • Alabama Extension at Auburn University will host a free, one-hour workshop series this fall to help homeowners understand property taxes due Oct. 1 and learn about exemptions and payment options—local tax professionals will join Extension agents to answer questions.  Gulf Coast Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Naturally Mobile initiative has installed permeable pavers in a Publix parking lot off Old Shell Road to manage stormwater runoff and reduce flooding—city officials said a mandatory meeting for potential bidders will be held this Wednesday as part of a $140,000 grant-funded plan that includes broader stormwater improvements.  UTV 44

  • City leaders plan a redesign of McGregor Avenue at the Springhill intersection to create a safer, more walkable area that serves as a new gateway to Springhill. The project will run from the Museum Drive roundabout to the Springhill intersection and add wider sidewalks + safer crosswalks + improved lighting, with construction set to begin after the South McGregor Avenue and Dauphin Street project wraps up later this year.  WKRG News 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Thousands of runners will join the 18th Annual GO Run 5K Race and 1-Mile Fun Run on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Hancock Whitney Stadium (500 Stadium Drive) to support cancer research at USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute. The event, presented by the Catranis Family Charitable Foundation, starts with the 5K at 8 a.m. and the fun run at 9 a.m., with packet pick-up on Friday, Sept. 26.  Gulf Coast Media
  • During National Recovery Month, Ricardo Martinez from Wings of Life urged those struggling with addiction to call for help today—he noted that the nonprofit offers a 90-day in-patient program and transition services to rebuild lives and families.  WKRG News 5
  • USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital celebrated Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by hosting its second annual reunion where young survivors, families and staff gathered in gold-decorated halls to mark progress in pediatric oncology—some children are still receiving treatment while others enjoy life outside the hospital.
