- ➤ Austal USA in Mobile is shifting to steel shipbuilding and is using its current facilities to work on projects like a Navy Auxiliary Floating Dry Dock and Offshore Patrol Cutters that will support future contracts and up to 2,000 new jobs—marking a busy decade ahead. - ➤ Wesley Anderson from the Alabama Cooperative Extension said black bears now live in Mobile and Washington counties as their numbers grow from nearby Georgia and Tennessee, and residents are advised to secure food and make noise to avoid surprising them—bears are protected and rarely attack. - ➤ Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron has endorsed Mobile mayoral candidate Spiro Cheriogotis in a video—he said youth sports helped shape his life and build character in children. Cheriogotis will face state Rep. Barbara Drummond in a runoff on Sept. 23 after no candidate won a majority on Aug. 26. AL.com
