The Haven for Animals will mark 25 years of lifesaving work by hosting its second annual Tails of Hope Gala on Thursday, Sept.

25 at The Venue, 105 S. Section St in Fairhope, with the event running from 6 & 9:30 p.m. The celebration honors Dr. Theresa Marshall’s legacy and will feature live music, special drinks, and snacks to support animal care programs across the region.

In 2021, the Coleman family discovered a 32-million-year-old leatherback sea turtle shell while fishing north of Mobile—paleontologist Drew Gentry said the fossil was embedded in a large boulder on a riverbank and required special equipment to remove, and it is now on display at the McWane Science Center in Birmingham.

A local architecture firm won the Excellence in Architecture and Design Award from Main Street Mobile for its work on the Isom Clemon Civil Rights Memorial Park, which features a large bronze statue of Clemon — educational plaques and community spaces created with input from local schools also make up the park design. The park serves as a memorial to the civil rights leader and a gathering place for labor and local community events.

Local oyster farmers in Mobile Bay are suing dredging companies—Carter’s Contracting Services, Weeks Marine, and Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company—for causing excess sediment that has raised oyster deaths to over 50% since last May.

Attorney Martin Cunningham said the companies argue there is not enough evidence to prove their work is linked to the high mortality rates.
