CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Gulf Coast Rep in downtown OWA announced its ambitious 2026 season that will open on Sept. 24 with Darren Butler’s interactive comedy Just Frank and include The Miracle Worker and Maytag Virgin, while the musical Runaway Home is set for next summer. The nonprofit will also launch a Youth Theatre program for children, teens and adults—supporting a new works initiative and fresh local talent.  Gulf Coast Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Orange Beach City Schools has ranked second in academic proficiency with 81% of students scoring proficient in math, English language arts, and science. The district led the state by ranking first in science proficiency—gaining 19% improvement over three years—and also posted double-digit gains in math and English language arts.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kay Ivey signed a proclamation on July 8 to set special election dates for House District 13, and three candidates filed, including Mike Elliott whose eligibility is now in question. The Alabama Ethics Commission found that Elliott did not show proof of mailing his required Statement of Economic Interests on time + this may lead to his removal from the ballot.  1819 News
  • The Justice Department announced a settlement with Norfolk Southern today that requires the company to give Amtrak trains the highest priority on the Crescent Route—employees will be trained and dispatch decisions will need supervisor approval to reduce delays. The deal comes after a 53% decline in delay minutes from 2024 to 2025, showing improved performance for passenger travel.  UTV 44
  • Mobile city officials will vote Tuesday, September 16 on a five-year transit plan with Via Transit LLC that costs $12.1 million per year with $8 million from the city and $4.1 million from federal funds. The agreement will gradually replace the current Wave bus system with an on-demand service and includes a nine-month review period — a step designed to improve public transportation efficiency.  AL.com
