ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Two children of R&B singer Angie Stone filed a lawsuit in Georgia against a trucking company, a truck manufacturer and others over a fatal interstate crash in Mobile where a driver lost control of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van that flipped and was hit by an 18-wheeler—killing Stone as she tried to escape. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Sixteen-year-old Chevion Sanders is one of Reid State Technical College's youngest students and will study cosmetology while joining her mother in the dorm — she finished high school in February in Semmes and will start classes soon. Her early college decision shows a new wave of youth entering higher education. AL.com
- ➤ The University of South Alabama reported record enrollment numbers today with 14,285 students and its largest freshman class of 2,137 new students—undergraduate and graduate programs also posted significant gains and nearly 3,000 students now live on campus. University officials said that construction of the new College of Medicine building will finish in December, which will allow an increase in first-year medical students. NBC 15

- ➤ Mobile City Council will consider a new ordinance that requires downtown vacant property owners to register their buildings and pay fees — a measure prompted by a three-alarm fire in September that nearly destroyed a city block. Council members also debated safety measures and fairness as the proposal outlines inspections, fee schedules, and maintenance requirements for listed properties. AL.com
- ➤ Governor Kay Ivey and House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter are asking a court to stop the AHSAA rule that forces student-athletes who transfer to sit out for one year because of the CHOOSE Act. They filed a lawsuit after an emergency meeting on September 4, saying the rule breaks state law as football season starts. UTV 44
