  • Austal USA signed a memorandum of understanding with Master Boat Builders to expand shipbuilding capacity by outsourcing naval work and planning future projects. The companies will work together to cut bottlenecks and shorten production schedules—boosting production and supporting workforce development along the Gulf Coast.  WKRG News 5

CRIME NEWS

  • The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals upheld Mobile man Kytwoin Mallory's murder conviction from March 2024 after he shot Robbie Blue in April 2021 — he had claimed self-defense but now faces a 25 year prison sentence.  WKRG News 5
  • Mobile Police are investigating a robbery and assault at a local Little Caesars on Airport Boulevard — an employee sustained minor injuries when a woman grabbed merchandise and assaulted her around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 3.  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Mobile's Homeless Outreach Team is providing free ID cards to homeless residents so they can access services (like renewing a driver's license). Michelle Bolton received her first card and said it marks a fresh start as she prepares to get a job.  NBC 15
  • Today, Mayor Sandy Stimpson and Colonel Steve Carey (U.S. Air Force, Retired) from the Mobile Bay Area Veterans Commission announce that Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. is named Patriot of the Year for his work in education and his service in the Marines and that Colonel John F. Kilpatrick is named Veteran of the Year for his 37 years of military service and help with veterans.  UTV 44
  • Lt. Gov Will Ainsworth criticized the state high school sports group for ruling that students using financial help from the CHOOSE Act had to sit out a year before playing sports—he said he would offer legislation to remove that power and assign eligibility oversight to an entity that follows the law, with Governor Kay Ivey and other lawmakers also voicing disapproval.  1819 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • CVS and Walgreens have confirmed they will give residents COVID-19 vaccines without a prescription in Alabama, easing access compared to nearby states—where a prescription is now required. New federal guidelines restrict vaccine eligibility for healthy children and pregnant people, but local pharmacies will continue offering the shots.  AL.com

  • Former baseball standouts from Mobile and Baldwin County will renew their rivalry on Sept. 28 in Daphne at The Hutch—an event that offers a free nine-inning game with pre-game activities starting at 2:30 p.m.—as part of the tied series between the Mobile Cubs and Baldwin Blue Crabs.  Gulf Coast Media
