COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The new Archbishop, The Most Rev. Mark Rivituso, will be installed today at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (downtown Mobile) and he pledged to address homelessness by exploring affordable housing initiatives and safer shelter partnerships as local groups reported serving over 2,500 homeless individuals last year with only 829 permanent beds available.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Mobile police responded to a call on the 4200 block of Bayfront Rd. just before 2 p.m. about a disorderly subject who fired shots from his home (SWAT and a crisis intervention team arrived) and officers returned fire (injuring the subject, who was taken to a local hospital).  UTV 44
  • Mobile police said a 67-year-old woman, Helen Jay, last seen near the 6800 block of Airport Boulevard, is missing and is considered endangered because she has a medical condition - anyone with information should call 251-208-7211.  WKRG News 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mobile Arts Council announced a live art competition called The Throwdown that will be held on October 2 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the National Maritime Museum where five local artists will compete using shared supplies and a mystery box—this event celebrates MAC’s 70th anniversary and follows a September 19 release party featuring a new craft beer.  UTV 44

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Prichard certified its municipal election results after counting only four of the 36 provisional ballots because the clerk’s office delivered them late—raising questions over the process. Mayoral candidate Carletta Davis with 951 votes will face incumbent Jimmie Gardner with 635 votes in a runoff on September 23—while advocates call for accountability.  UTV 44
  • Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said police will conduct more checkpoints downtown to curb speeding and reckless driving as officers plan similar operations this weekend and next; Friday's shift from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Henry Aaron Loop will see 151 citations issued plus one DUI arrest plus 41 warnings given.  1819 News
  • Voters in Bay Minette elected Joshua Brown as the city's first Black mayor — he toured the Novelis recycling site on Wednesday and will be sworn in on Nov. 3 to continue the city’s growth.  NBC 15
  • During Tuesday's meeting, incumbent councilman William Carroll abstained from certifying District 2 election results and demanded a roll call vote—citing possible violations of the Zoghby Act while final ballots were still being counted. After all votes were tallied, the council approved the certification by a 6-0 vote and postponed discussions on the fiscal budget and public transportation as questions over Samantha Ingram's residency continued in court.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alabama Department of Insurance approved final premium rates for the Affordable Care Act individual market in Alabama last week with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama increasing 19.3%, UnitedHealthcare rising 20%, and Celtic Insurance up 25% while Oscar Insurance, new to the market, remains unchanged (the new rates take effect on January 1).  1819 News

  • Former Fairhope quarterback Riley Leonard earned a spot on the Colts’ 53-man roster after being selected in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft — he posted strong preseason numbers and will back up Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson in the regular season.  Gulf Coast Media
