COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A vibrant field of sunflowers has opened at Sirmon Farms in Daphne—owned by the Sirmon family—that offers free visits and flower picking until the blooms run out. Donations help Pilots for Christ continue free flights for patients in need, giving local families both beauty and hope.  WKRG News 5
  • The refurbished Newhouse Teen Center reopens this week with music, food, and activities for local teens and has added a gaming and academic area for support and creativity. The center will host the Hump Day Hangout—Paint Edition event on Sept. 3 from 5–7 p.m. at 2960 Alston Drive, and teens are encouraged to bring canned goods for families in need.  WKRG News 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nine teams from the University of South Alabama pitched ideas at the Mitchell College of Business in a contest hosted by the Launch USA Program—engineering student Braxton Daw’s ManuLabs won $7,500 while a team from the Whiddon College of Medicine received $2,500 for their at-home diagnostic kit. The competition gave students a chance to build real-world business skills.  The Mobile Rundown

CRIME NEWS

  • Mobile police investigated a shooting that occurred on Sunday at 3 a.m. on the 1600 block of St. Stephens Road when two men were injured and four vehicles — including an MPD car — were struck by gunfire during an altercation between two males; officers have not released suspect details.  1819 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An upcoming free event at the Son of a Sailor Festival in Mobile will let residents talk with electric vehicle owners and ask questions about charging and range. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 at 250 Dauphin Street — it also covers federal tax credits available until Sept. 30.  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mobile city leaders plan to change Wave Transit service as Mayor Sandy Stimpson proposes that Via take over daily operations from Transdev. The City Council meets today to review a five-year contract worth $12.1 million a year, and Via will study ridership for nine months and start on October 1 if the deal is approved — a step meant to reduce cost and improve service.  NBC 15
  • Vertical construction has begun on the Mobile Arena project on a 22-acre downtown site as the first steel beams were set—Mayor Sandy Stimpson said the $300 million project is on time and on budget. The new arena will have flexible seating for up to 10,000 spectators and multiple ballrooms for local events before opening in time for the 2027 Mardi Gras season.  NBC 15

HEALTH NEWS

  • USA Health opened a weekly clinic at LeFlore Magnet High School to give students on-campus care so they can stay in class. The clinic started on Aug. 26 and will run every Tuesday morning for the rest of the school year.  The Mobile Rundown

  • After Alabama lost 31-17 to Florida State, former quarterback Joe Namath first said the season might be long but then shared hope that Coach Kalen DeBoer would make changes for more wins. He posted his message on social media—'ROLL TIDE!!!'.  1819 News
