- ➤ Between August 18 and August 24, Amtrak resumed its rail service in Mobile and recorded 1,067 departures and 1,117 arrivals—totaling over 2,000 passengers in its first week. The numbers show a strong local response to the revived train service. UTV 44

- ➤ SeaD’s rapid genetic test at 44 Mobile restaurants found that 34 served domestic shrimp as advertised while 10 offered imported shrimp despite menu claims — the findings support local shrimpers and may prompt stricter enforcement of state labeling laws. AL.com
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Mobile Police Department arrested a man and two juveniles after they robbed a man at gunpoint on Aug. 28 at about 9:45 p.m. in downtown Mobile — the juveniles were taken to Strickland Youth Center and the 19-year-old suspect faces a charge of first-degree robbery. WKRG News 5
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Mobile is considering a five-year deal with Via to manage the WAVE Transit System for fixed-route, paratransit and on-demand services. The City Council will review the proposal on Sept. 2 with a vote expected on Sept. 9 while current service operations continue for nine months as Via gathers rider feedback for future route changes. - ➤ On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic damage along the Gulf Coast and forced Jeffrey Medlin—then the Science and Operations officer at NWS Mobile—to take charge of New Orleans operations as the Mobile office provided backup for 21 days amid limited resources.
