- ➤ Swallow-tailed kites spent the summer nesting in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and the Black Belt and will leave for Florida in September. The state lists these graceful birds as of high conservation concern—habitat loss threatens their numbers. AL.com
- ➤ Meaher State Park opened after a major renovation funded by state bonds and a GOMESA grant and now offers four tiny cabins with water views, 45 luxury RV campsites and a new park headquarters on 1,300 acres near the Mobile-Tensaw Delta; Mobile’s Three Mile Creek Greenway has a 0.75 mile extension from Mobile Japanese Gardens—Fairhope held the grand opening of its 108 acre Flying Creek Nature Preserve on Aug 23, featuring hiking trails, a butterfly garden and plans for more outdoor adventure facilities. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ All four Mobile mayoral candidates campaigned over the weekend urging voters to support their plans to improve the city. Some candidates said that if no one wins a full majority, a runoff will take place on Sept. 23—highlighting the close contest ahead of Tuesday's election. WKRG News 5
- ➤ Foley City Council candidates held a forum—attended by about 80 local residents—to discuss growth, traffic, school funding and public safety ahead of the district-based ballot on Aug. 26. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Baptist Health Care Foundation celebrated 50 years of helping Baptist Health Care and our community since it was started in 1975. It raised more than $75 million to support services like cancer care and heart treatment—showing strong support from local donors. Gulf Coast Media
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Orange Beach won its season opener with a 34-14 victory over Elberta at the new athletic complex near their school—although the facility is still unfinished. Coach Wade Waldrop said the win gives the Makos a strong start as they prepare to face Citronelle on Aug. 29. Gulf Coast Media
- ➤ St. Michael Catholic overcame a slow start to beat Bayside Academy 41-10 on Friday night as Gunner Rivers threw four touchdown passes — key plays by Brennen Yamane and Tucker Tomlinson helped build the win.
