COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers gathered on Saturday to clean parks and waterways south of I-10, including Mobile Bay, Alba Beach, Dog River, and McNally Park. Nonprofit Peninsula of Mobile and local residents filled bags with bottles, fast food trash, and larger items while the City of Mobile and partners handled disposal — the project received support from a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant and the Mobile Police Department.  WKRG News 5
  • Mayor Sandy Stimpson led a walk and bike event today on the new section of the Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail at the Charles Wood Japanese Garden—local leaders and citizens celebrated the ribbon cutting with recent ADA upgrades and a restriped parking lot. City Councilwoman Gina Gregory and partners secured ALDOT grant funds and worked with contractors on the project—security lighting and cameras will be added soon as the trail eventually connects Langan Park to Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.  1819 News

  • The Mobile Police Department is asking for help to locate Gerald Williams, 77, who is missing from the 1200 block of Bascombe Street as he is endangered by a medical condition—anyone with information is urged to call immediately.  UTV 44
  • Mobile police are seeking help to locate 77-year-old Gerald Williams, who was last seen near the 1200 block of Bascombe Street and requires immediate medical attention—if seen, call 251-208-7211.  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich urged residents to vote in the municipal elections on August 26, saying past low turnout affected city decisions like road improvements—four of five council seats are contested and new members may soon join the city council. This election could change local priorities for community projects.  1819 News
  • Mobile mayoral candidates Paul Prine, Connie Hudson, Spiro Cheriogotis and Barbara Drummond held a debate on August 14 that was broadcast on FM Talk 106.5 and hosted at the Arthur Outlaw Convention Center. The event—organized by the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and moderated by Sean Sullivan—featured former U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne questioning the candidates on economic development.  1819 News
  • Mayor Sandy Stimpson celebrated Amtrak's return today—after a test run on Saturday that marked the first passenger rail service in Mobile since Hurricane Katrina—and said the new route with five stops from New Orleans to Mobile is expected to boost tourism and the local economy. HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of South Alabama’s Mitchell Cancer Institute has received a Department of Defense award of $616,000 for a two-year study on how obesity may drive colorectal cancer progression. Dr. Chandrani Sarkar will lead the research—she plans to examine the role of neuropeptide Y in the disease process.  1819 News
