CRIME NEWS

  • Two people died in south Alabama on Wednesday when an altercation on McVay Drive led to the fatal shooting of Eric Brown and police reported Princeton Warren, the suspected shooter, was found with gunshot wounds on a home’s porch on Boudousquie Street before later dying from a cardiac event—investigations are ongoing.  AL.com
  • A Prichard police officer—Malachi Ligon—was arrested by the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office after he allegedly kept a suspect’s phone and sent private pictures during the arrest of Theodore Roberts, Jr. for domestic violence and resisting arrest.  1819 News
  • Authorities investigated an apparent murder-suicide early Thursday at a Daphne home on Sable Court — a 3:20 a.m. call reported multiple victims, including the shooter, according to Baldwin County Sheriff Anthony Lowery.  AL.com

  • Alabama public school students, staff, and parents face a digital detox as a new law bans wireless devices from classrooms this school year. The FOCUS Act requires each school board to set rules for storing devices and handling discipline—experts say the change may boost test scores and lower cyberbullying.  Gulf Coast Media
  • More than 30 elementary students in Daphne will begin the 2025-2026 school year with new backpacks, notebooks, pencils and other supplies from the Hunter’s Heart Foundation, which raised $1,995 from community donors—leftover funds will support future programs like the Holiday Helping Tree.  Gulf Coast Media

  • Gov. Kay Ivey appointed Charlanna Skaggs as deputy commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, replacing Edward Poolos who is now director of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management+ Skaggs has served as the department’s general counsel since 2019 and will work with Commissioner Chris Blankenship to boost conservation efforts and outdoor recreation across the state.  Gulf Coast Media
  • A federal judge ruled that an Alabama law banning DEI programs in public schools will stay in effect because University of Alabama students and professors did not meet the legal standard for a preliminary injunction—although their lawsuit will continue.  Alabama Public Radio
