ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Mobile Fire-Rescue responded shortly after 8 a.m. Monday when two contract workers were trapped 20—30 feet underground during sewer bypass work off Howell's Ferry Road in the Princeton Woods area and were later pronounced dead from toxic gas exposure while a third worker was rescued and treated.  UTV 44

  • Federal officials arrested six individuals in Atmore Tuesday morning for alleged illegal immigration—one had a violent criminal history that included homicide.  AL.com
  • Mary Rice spoke publicly for the first time since her 2018 conviction and claimed she was forced on a harrowing 2017 road trip with Billy Boyette along the northwest Florida—Alabama coast where she faced threats and violence, though prosecutors disputed her account.  NBC 15

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A group of unlikely allies including the Mobile Baykeeper and Bayou la Batre Mayor opposes dumping dredge materials in Mobile Bay for a Port of Mobile project that will widen and deepen the port. The Mobile Baykeeper filed a notice of intent to sue under the Endangered Species Act, and Corps officials say the dumped sediment renourishes the ecosystem—local residents worry about harm to the bay.  1819 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mobile County Grants Department has begun accepting applications for its down payment assistance program—designed to help residents purchase homes. Grants Management Coordinator Jessica Johnson explained eligibility details during an interview on Aug 12.  WKRG News 5
  • The City of Mobile is accepting applications for its new C251: Citizens Academy, a six-week program that offers local residents hands-on learning about city departments and runs fall sessions from Sept. 10 to Oct. 15. Only 40 spots are available—applications will be accepted until Aug. 26.  UTV 44
  • Downtown Mobile started work on a project to make the streets safer and easier on Monday, August 11 — it is the first phase of a $1.1 million plan that will remove 26 traffic signals and replace them with four-way stops using flashing red lights starting today. The city and local partners will add new ADA ramps and restripe crosswalks in phases until spring — steps meant to help pedestrians and drivers move more smoothly.  The Mobile Rundown
