  • The Mobile County Animal Shelter is nearly full as over 80 new dogs, puppies, cats and kittens have arrived since July 26 and the staff need help finding them new homes. Commissioner Connie Hudson is covering many adoption fees — and residents can visit the shelter at 7665 Howells Ferry Road during regular hours.  The Mobile Rundown
  • Grayson Hovell, an 11-year-old student at Griggs Elementary, raised nearly $600 in three days by selling 50-cent coloring sheets to support Mobile’s K-9 units via the Mobile Law Enforcement Foundation—his funds will help buy essential equipment and supplies.  The Mobile Rundown
  • Mobile Parks and Recreation and WKRG are partnering to hold a Back 2 School Bash at Mardi Gras Park on Friday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event will hand out backpacks with school supplies—binders, notebook paper and crayons—and offer free food, a DJ and inflatables on a first-come, first-served basis.  City of Mobile

  • The menu for the food car in the new Amtrak Mardi Gras service train was released Monday, August 4th — service will start August 18th from Mobile to New Orleans.  UTV 44

CRIME NEWS

  • Mobile Fire-Rescue officials said Mobile Police arrested 31 year old Justin Jones on Sunday morning after he set a fire at a vacant home on State Street and tried to ignite another on Old Shell Road—Jones faces 2nd degree arson charges with further charges pending investigation.  WKRG News 5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The USTA Boys’ National Championships are underway at the Mobile Tennis Center as top young tennis players compete and boost our local economy. The tournament finals will take place this Saturday and the event is free to watch.  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mobile mayoral candidate Spiro Cheriogotis—a Mobile native and University of Alabama School of Law graduate who worked for the Mobile County DA's office, served as a defense attorney, and spent six years as a county district court judge—will appear live on NBC 15 News at 6 tonight as he begins his campaign to run for mayor.  NBC 15
  • The Mobile city council halted a proposed land sale that would have transferred property from the Dearborn YMCA to the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association for one dollar after community members voiced strong concerns about its public use. Local leaders urged residents to speak at a city council meeting tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Government Plaza—saying further discussion is needed regarding the property's future.  UTV 44
