- ➤ Gulf Shores Police are asking for dog-walking volunteers and adopters to help care for six abandoned dogs housed at the station at 220 Clubhouse Drive – police say full kennels mean officers must divert resources from other public safety tasks. Interim Police Chief Dan Netemeyer explained the rescued dogs need proper care before adoption – volunteers and new owners can ease the burden on police duties. Gulf Coast Media
- ➤ Since July 26, Mobile County Animal Shelter has taken in more than 75 animals and is over capacity, so Commissioner Connie Hudson is sponsoring adoptions to move 80 dogs and puppies and 9 cats and kittens into foster or permanent homes. - ➤ On July 29, the Mobile City Council approved a $16.7M contract with McElheny Construction to rebuild 17 blocks of St. Louis Street, a thriving downtown corridor, with plans to add sidewalks, ADA ramps, new curbs, gutters, lighting, drainage, and rebuilt underground utilities. The roughly $17M project is funded by federal grants and local contributions and will begin this fall — city staff will use a block-by-block plan to keep most of the roadway open— ensuring minimal impact to local businesses. - ➤ USA Health University Hospital earned three awards from the American Heart Association for its stroke care, showing its team acted fast to save lives and reduce disability. - ➤ USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital is launching a new service to transport very sick newborns and children from across the Gulf Coast, including Baldwin County and rural Mississippi, up to 200 miles away.
