- ➤ Mobile officially opened a nationally recognized playground at Figures Park and Community Center today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. at 658 Donald Street, and the $600,000 project features climbing areas, towers, zip lines, splash nets and a double zip line with a Zero G chair—designed to serve children of all ages and abilities. - ➤ On July 17, 2025, officers from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office executed the “Up in Smoke” operation on Navco Road and McVay Avenue, arresting convicted felon David Mitchell after a traffic stop revealed a stolen semi-automatic handgun, about 381 grams of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia—Mitchell admitted ownership and now faces federal charges through the Gulf of America Task Force. - ➤ Lucas Miller, a rising senior at the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, earned a perfect ACT score of 36 that placed him in the top 1% of high school test takers from the class of 2024; he will begin a summer internship through the Alabama Aerospace Fellowship at the US Space and Rocket Center (a program developed with support from Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth and Lockheed Martin) (an opportunity to grow his skills). - ➤ Former Mobile Housing Authority CEO Michael Pierce is appealing his termination to the Mobile County Personnel Board over claims that proper procedures were not followed and the decision was politically motivated by Mayor Sandy Stimpson — his attorney filed a motion for reinstatement and backpay that will be heard on October 21st. - ➤ After more than eight years of planning and discussions with the federal government, the council will consider a 17-block overhaul of infrastructure along St. Louis Street that may get underway soon pending final approval. Lagniappe Daily
- ➤ Crews have started testing 24-inch concrete piles at six locations along the Mobile River Bridge route—from May through August—to check that the planned foundations can handle heavy loads and hurricane winds.
