  • Gulf Coast Media won 20 Alabama Press Association Media Awards for work done in 2024; the awards were announced at the 2025 APA Summer Convention banquet at Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach on June 28. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In Summerdale, retired Delta man Randy Farris is running for mayor in the Aug. 26 election after the town has not held a contested mayoral race in at least 17 years — he said he would bring term limits and live video streaming of council meetings to help residents follow local government. Farris, who has served as a bus driver for Baldwin County Public Schools and made stops in every neighborhood, is challenging longtime mayor David Wilson as the town seeks controlled, steady growth.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Rep. Shomari Figures from Mobile co-sponsored a bipartisan bill introduced Thursday that will set a national rule to protect college athletes if they earn money from their name, image and likeness. Leaders from the Southeastern Conference and the University of Alabama said they support the bill—its clear guidelines will help athletes with health care and money lessons.  AL.com
  • Alabama Public Television warned it will lose about $3 million a year—about 13% of its budget—and be forced to cut programs if the Senate approves a recissions package next week.  1819 News
  • The new terminal at downtown Mobile will have airlines like Delta, United and American shift from the regional airport in fall with first flights expected in November. Officials will rebid the terminal’s interior work—covering flooring and drywall—to control a budget that has grown from $381 million to over $400 million.  NBC 15

  • The American Red Cross urges donors along the Gulf Coast to donate blood this month as hospital supplies are low—Type O blood is critically needed and drives are scheduled in Fairhope (July 30), Foley (July 16), Gulf Shores (July 16, 22 and 31), and Orange Beach (July 31).  Gulf Coast Media
  • Mobile County recorded its second human West Nile Virus case this year, confirmed by Health Officer Dr. Kevin Michaels. VectorServices will increase spraying and conduct door-to-door surveys to cut mosquito populations — residents are urged to use repellent and cover skin when outdoors.  UTV 44
