Good morning, Mobile. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 20th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Feeding the Gulf Coast will host a Summer Meals Celebration at North Mobile YMCA on June 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will offer free lunches, interactive inflatables, and activity stations for children 18 and younger—an effort supported by local community organizations and the USDA.  UTV 44
  • A local nonprofit that rescues birds in Baldwin County was locked out of its Facebook and Instagram accounts after hackers broke in three months ago, which halted new bird rescue calls and donations and threatens its growth. The founders (T.J. Palkovic and Jodi Steely) said they regained access to Instagram and now plan to raise awareness on TikTok.  UTV 44
  • Graham Creek Nature Preserve will host International Mud Day on Saturday, June 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at 23460 Wolf Bay Drive in Foley, where families will play in a large mud pit with mud pies and full-body dives (organizers recommend bringing clothes that can get ruined, a towel, a change of clothes and sturdy water shoes).  Gulf Coast Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Foley’s Brandon Styles Theater hosts a family-run magic show every Wednesday from May 28 to Aug. 6, where the Styles family blends classic illusions with new acts by daughter Baylee Jade. The show offers tickets from $25 to $49 and local dining discounts (children 3 and under are free when seated on a parent's lap).  Gulf Coast Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MAWSS said a broken pipe caused nearly 800,000 gallons of wastewater to overflow into a ditch along Old Shell Road and Airport Boulevard (with 177,737 gallons entering Milkhouse Creek) and crews built an access road to install a bypass pump (while they repaired the pipe).  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State candidates began fundraising on May 19 for next year's races for governor, U.S. senator, attorney general, lieutenant governor, and secretary of state. Key contenders include Tommy Tuberville, who announced his run for governor on May 27 in Auburn, and Attorney General Steve Marshall, who now faces a Senate race after Tuberville's move.  AL.com
  • David Miguel said his mother was detained by ICE in early May while she renewed her work permit in Birmingham and is now held in Louisiana — she was targeted for a self-deportation incident in 2013 — and he is raising funds for legal help to keep her in the country.  AL.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • On June 17, Mobile held a ceremonial first pitch at 1:30 p.m. at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center on Water Street as part of the unveiling of the Hall of Fame Walk featuring six bronze statues of local sports legends such as Hank Aaron, Willie McCovey, Satchel Paige, Billy Williams, Ozzie Smith, and Robert Brazile Jr. The $11 million project was largely funded by the downtown tax-increment financing district and will hold a celebration in late June with former athletes and city officials.  AL.com
