  • Local landscaper Steven Moore has not stopped mowing lawns in the summer heat despite owing $10,000 on his prosthetic leg from a hit-and-run accident three years ago. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Mobile Police Department is searching for a missing person after a boating accident occurred on June 15 in Mobile — the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the incident.  WKRG News 5

CRIME NEWS

  • A Fairhope man has been charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the killing of his mother and injuring his father after deputies responded to a domestic incident on Dominion Drive around 11 p.m. Saturday, June 14—he fled the scene and was later pursued on Interstate-65, with the chase ending in Escambia County.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Late Saturday night, a domestic dispute on Dominion Drive near Fairhope left one person dead and one seriously injured as officers found two injured residents and suspect Ryan Thomas Smith fled before an I-65 chase ended in Escambia County using the Grappler System, and he is now held without bond on murder and attempted murder charges.  AL.com

  • Bestselling Alabama author Andy Andrews holds live podcast sessions at his Orange Beach bookstore — Wisdom Harbour General Studios & General Store — on The Wharf where he engages fans, signs books, and shares travel stories. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Laylah Willett graduated from Foley High School on May 20—twelve years after she was rescued from a 35 foot well when she was 6, and she still treasures the doll given to her by a local youth pastor for comfort. She plans to attend Coastal Alabama Community College and hopes to become a meteorologist or special ed teacher while enjoying summer with her family and her dog Saban.  AL.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Painted buntings with bright blue heads and red bodies arrived in Alabama around April and are breeding this summer before many migrate south in the fall—birders are advised to listen for their melodic calls when using white millet at feeders. The secretive birds hide in thick vegetation near backyards and abandoned lots, making each sighting a special find for local nature enthusiasts.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Steve Marshall said Alabama joined a $7.4 billion nationwide settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family to help fund addiction treatment and prevention across the state. If bankruptcy court approves the deal, state and local governments will receive up to $75 million over the next 15 years — most funds arriving in the first three years.  AL.com
