Good morning, Mobile. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 10, the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church voted to close 27 churches in South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, adding to 20 churches that were closed on May 30 in North Alabama. Most of the closures were due to small, declining membership and some issues over property disputes—like the battle over the 115-year-old Guy’s Chapel in Bay Minette.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Mobile Police Department is looking for a 62-year-old woman (Rosemary Payne) who was reported missing on May 30 from the Theodore area and has a medical condition that requires immediate attention; anyone with information is urged to call (251-208-1700).  WKRG News 5

  • Prichard police chief Walter Knight said he is tired of recent violence — citing a weekend shooting that left 41-year-old Willie Smith dead and an unsolved homicide on First Avenue — and urged residents to report crimes and support proposals for higher wages to keep officers from leaving.  WKRG News 5
  • Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch warned during a radio interview that his officers would respond with deadly force if protesters disrupted law enforcement during the No Kings rally held downtown on April 19—while organizers maintained that the protest had been peaceful.  AL.com
