COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Mobile-based charity Dwell Mobile lost most of its 80% federal funding with one grant already lost and another cut expected, so organizers held a rummage sale Saturday morning on Government Boulevard to support refugee resettlement programs. The nonprofit is asking the city to rezone its property and will have a public hearing today at Mobile’s Board of Zoning Adjustment—this could allow a thrift store to open later this summer. - ➤ A Mobile County family celebrated their matriarch Helen Elsworth Bru turning 105 on May 29 in Mobile. She attended local schools and started a special needs program in Saraland, and the family will hold a party Saturday evening & honor her legacy & life-long service. WKRG News 5
- ➤ Kevin Bacon’s non-profit SixDegrees.org named Dumas Wesley Community Center a top 20 finalist for its multimillion-dollar Purposed, Produced ad campaign — an honor that shows its strong impact on Mobile and Baldwin communities. Voting stays open until June 6 and winners will be announced in New York City during National Advertising Week from Oct. 6—9. WKRG News 5
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Mobile police responded to a report of shots fired on the 1600 block of St. Stephens Road shortly after 3:00 a.m. on June 1—when an officer veered to avoid a stopped car and collided with another vehicle and a parked car—and arrested 26-year-old Xavier Penn after he tossed a firearm, while one person was taken by a personal vehicle to a hospital as a precaution. - ➤ A judge sentenced 21-year-old Charvez Monte Green to life in prison after he shot Karlos Pettway five times during a crawfish boil at a mutual friend’s home on June 19, 2022—Green was found guilty in April and will serve his life sentence after he completes his consecutive federal sentences. - ➤ Mobile police investigated an officer-involved shooting on the 3300 block of Dawes Road— a man was struck by gunfire just before 9 p.m. Saturday night, and additional details will be released on Monday. WKRG News 5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ ACCEL charter school in Mobile has named Dr. Jaclyn Stringer as its new high school principal and she begins today; she brings 20 years of teaching experience and a Ph.D in educational leadership from the University of South Alabama. Previously an assistant principal at Saraland, she is set to lead school improvement initiatives—she is also married to State Rep. Shane Stringer—adding valuable local ties to the school. 1819 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ghost retired from the Mobile Police Department after eight years of service and earned awards during key events—such as a citation for his work during a New Year’s Eve shooting—and now rests at a police horse retirement home in Trenton, Florida. WKRG News 5
- ➤ On Friday, Gov. Kay Ivey announced new appointments to the re-formed State Board of Veterans Affairs from veterans groups such as the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the Marine Corps League—adding retired Colonels, Sergeant Brandi Whitma and others to support state veterans. The move comes after changes that shifted oversight of state veterans affairs to the governor. 1819 News
- ➤ On May 29, the Alabama Department of Health announced that parts of Mobile Bay including Dauphin Island Bay, Heron Bay, Cedar Point, and Portersville Bay reopened for oyster harvesting after a closure that started on May 10. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Marine Resources Division is monitoring the bay for bacteriological safety. WKRG News 5
