Good morning, Mobile. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 1st of June.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mobile Bay fishermen said new tariffs on shrimp from Asia and South America are already helping with short-term gains — though they expect it will take years for the industry to fully recover — and they call for long-term relief measures.  Lagniappe Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Saturday, a group of mentors held a retreat in Daphne that taught more than a dozen teenagers from Mobile and Baldwin Counties ways to resolve conflicts and turn pressures into positive actions. The program, called GLOAT for Greatest Leaders of All Time, will track the teens over the next 1 to 2 years + include mentors such as a local DJ, corrections workers, a family therapist and a reformed convict.  NBC 15

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • May 2025 was one of the wettest months in many Alabama cities—Tuscaloosa recorded 14.45 inches of rain and Mobile received 10.23 inches—and the drier start of June will bring only light rain this week as most areas expect less than an inch.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Steve Marshall obtained a preliminary injunction against AKME Gardens, a Baldwin County company that falsely claimed to be certified to sell nursery plants and seeds and accepted payments without delivering products—actions that led to multiple charges under the Deceptive Trade Practices Act—while his office seeks restitution, a state-wide halt of the business, and appropriate penalties.  1819 News
  • Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who recently announced his run for governor, said on Friday during an interview on Huntsville WVNN’s 'The Dale Jackson Show' that any lottery system in Alabama must be approved by the legislature and a public vote—ensuring funds stay in the state instead of going to private lottery operators.  1819 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baptist Health Care performed its first TriClip procedure earlier this month to treat tricuspid regurgitation and help patients resume normal activities within a week. The health system—having performed over 2,000 structural heart procedures—was named one of Premier's 15 Top Health Systems and is the only local system to earn this national honor.  Gulf Coast Media
